We are currently seeking a highly proficient and driven Senior Linux Engineer to become a vital member of our Kernel HAVOCK Team, reporting directly to the Director of Compute Architecture. In this pivotal role, you will contribute significantly to the design, development, and enhancement of our bare-metal systems, from the Power-On Self-Test (POST) to integration within a Kubernetes cluster. The primary responsibilities of the team include the maintenance of a custom Linux kernel, various operating system images (primarily Ubuntu-based), the virtualization stack (kubevirt/qemu/vfio), and the container/pod runtime stack (containerd/nydus/kubelet). You will work closely with cross-functional teams, upstream engineering teams, and stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of high-performance and reliable software solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain tools for building custom Linux kernels and stateless operating system images.
  • Automate the packaging of essential components, including drivers, microcode, and out-of-tree patches.
  • Act as a senior point of contact for hardware issue escalation and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define Linux and OS requirements, specifications, and system architecture.
  • Analyze and optimize the performance of bare-metal and virtualized systems, identify bottlenecks, and propose enhancements for improved efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience managing large fleets of Linux servers.
  • Extensive experience in troubleshooting and debugging hardware, operating system, and kernel issues.
  • A proven track record of enhancing system efficiency across various subsystems (network, storage, security).
  • Strong familiarity with sysctls, cgroups, iommu, init systems, seccomp/apparmor.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and communicate proposed features and fixes.
  • A strong passion for automation, with a commitment to comprehensive process automation.
  • Excellent documentation skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with kexec, kpatch, kdump.
  • Experience in building CI/CD pipelines (GitHub or GitLab).
  • Opinions on software version control and team collaboration.
  • Experience in writing software tests.

Compensation and Benefits:

Our compensation reflects the labor market across various US geographic regions. The base salary for this position ranges from $130,000/year in our lowest geographic market to $210,000/year in our highest geographic market. Compensation is based on multiple factors, including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Work Environment:

Successful candidates will be expected to participate in onboarding training at our headquarters within their initial weeks of employment, with subsequent quarterly travel requirements.
