Laboratory Assistant

Position Overview

On-site | Casual | Entry Level

This role involves conducting preparations, extractions, and analyses of soil and water specimens.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create worklists for sample processing;
  • Retrieve samples from storage, which may involve lifting and transporting soil and water samples;
  • Accurately measure sample mass/volume, incorporate surrogates, and perform extractions using standard laboratory solvents;
  • Add quality control standards, including matrix spikes and surrogate solutions;
  • Complete bench sheets with precision;
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment such as pipettes, shakers, soxhlets, and centrifuges;
  • Prepare analytical standards and laboratory reagents;
  • Organize tasks to meet turnaround times and hold times;
  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), with any deviations requiring supervisor approval;
  • Maintain strict adherence to quality assurance and quality control protocols;
  • Availability for overtime work is essential;
  • Follow established methods to ensure analytical quality;
  • Comply with safety regulations and ALS health and safety policies;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Candidate Profile:

  • Intermediate proficiency in English communication (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and general computer skills;
  • Accurate and efficient data entry skills are advantageous;
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately in a dynamic environment;
  • Strong organizational skills with the capability to meet tight deadlines;
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to think critically in uncertain situations;
  • Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team;
  • Strong work ethic and readiness to undertake various tasks as needed;
  • Commitment to excellence and a client-oriented approach.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory;
  • Some experience in a fast-paced production or preparation environment is preferred;
  • Knowledge from high school science courses and/or basic laboratory safety practices is beneficial;
  • Experience handling chemicals or working in a laboratory context (e.g., school) is a plus, but not mandatory.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. (14 kg) regularly and carry samples over short distances;
  • Capability to sit or stand for extended periods;
  • Manual dexterity for performing intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Exposure to unpleasant fumes may occur;
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks and gloves must be worn when necessary.
