The primary objective of this role is to execute responsibilities as a Court Reporter, Judicial Clerk, and Judicial Assistant within the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island. As a Court Reporter, the individual guarantees a precise and enduring record of all courtroom proceedings. In the capacity of a Judicial Clerk, the individual undertakes tasks essential for the seamless operation of civil and criminal jury and non-jury trials. The role involves providing confidential and proficient assistance, delivering both technical and administrative support services to the Judiciary of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Preparing for court sessions by ensuring all necessary files are available and complete, and coordinating courtroom security measures.
  • Setting up digital recording equipment (CourtSmart) for trials, inputting case details, and verifying the functionality of equipment and microphones.
  • Commencing court proceedings, announcing cases, identifying involved parties, administering oaths to witnesses, managing exhibits, and accurately recording proceedings for playback or transcription.
  • Maintaining logbooks of court proceedings for easy reference and conducting legal research using available databases.
  • Attending non-jury criminal arraignments and accurately recording pleas on indictments.
  • After court sessions, documenting and entering details of proceedings into the designated database and providing summaries of court activities to the Trial Coordinator.
  • Upon conclusion of court proceedings, preparing necessary documentation reflecting case outcomes, such as Consent Orders or Probation Orders, and distributing them as required.
  • Performing various administrative tasks, including managing incoming calls, coordinating conference calls, preparing written correspondence, and maintaining filing systems.
  • Assisting the trial coordinator with daily operational duties.
  • Preparing and reviewing judges' decisions and forwarding them to relevant parties.
  • Monitoring jury attendance throughout trials, polling jurors, and reporting any exceptions to the presiding Justice.
  • Overseeing the selection process of the petit jury under the guidance of the presiding Justice, maintaining records of challenges, and administering oaths to selected jurors.
  • Typing detailed transcripts of court proceedings as necessary and ensuring proper filing with the appropriate court section.
