Job Title: Bilingual Court Stenographer

We are seeking a highly skilled and bilingual Court Stenographer to join our team at the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island. As a key member of our judiciary, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our court proceedings.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare for court by ensuring files are complete and in the Justice's possession
  • Arrange courtroom security and prepare digital recording equipment for trial
  • Record proceedings, keep accurate tags for playback and/or transcription, and maintain Court Clerk logbooks
  • Research legal cases manually or using Quicklaw database
  • Attend non-jury criminal arraignments, receive and record pleas on Indictments
  • Provide results of court proceedings and time spent in court to Trial Coordinator
  • Perform administrative tasks such as screening incoming phone calls, coordinating conference calls, and preparing written correspondence
  • Assist trial coordinator with day-to-day duties
  • Prepare and proofread judges' court decisions, forward same to counsel parties and publishers
  • Take attendance of the jury throughout trial, poll the full jury panel, and report to presiding Justice
  • Supervise the selection of the petit jury, keep record of all challenges and stand asides, and swear jurors individually upon selection
  • Typing verbatim transcripts of court proceedings as required, filing with appropriate Court section, and providing copy to lawyers
