Role Overview

The Lightspeed System Engineering team is responsible for defining the performance requirements of all RF components within the satellite communication system. As a Senior RF Systems Engineer, you will engage in simulating and modeling both terrestrial and in-orbit communication systems for Lightspeed, while also contributing to the architectural definition.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Simulate and model communication systems.
  • Collaborate with system architects, RF engineers, antenna engineers, and User Terminal and Landing Station engineers to delineate functions between hardware and software.
  • Develop methodologies for modeling RF link performance, accounting for various impairments.
  • Establish top-level specifications for RF links and associated subsystems.
  • Analyze and characterize system performance, maintaining performance budgets.
  • Provide technical assistance to regulatory, coordination, and market access teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field; a Master's degree or PhD with a focus on RF/microwave circuits or communication theory is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in RF communication systems.
  • Familiarity with digital communication systems, spread spectrum, and modulation techniques such as PSK, APSK, and QAM.
  • Experience with modulation standards like DVB-S2X and DVB-RCS2, as well as Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) methods.
  • Proficient in MATLAB or similar tools for modeling and analyzing RF communication systems.

Specialized Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in analyzing and simulating communication systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of RF passive and active components.
  • Knowledge of active antenna beamforming technologies, including digital beamforming and fast beam hopping.
  • Experience in characterizing radio performance at microwave frequencies, including the effects of rain fade on communication links.
  • Understanding of RF transceiver architectures and digital communication theory.
