Position Overview:

The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is in search of a dedicated individual to fulfill the role of In-House Legal Counsel. This position will be integral to the MNO's strategic initiatives, providing legal guidance on a variety of issues while supporting the organization's mission to serve the Métis community effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

The Legal Counsel will:

  • Collaborate with various MNO Branches to ensure alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives.
  • Conduct thorough legal reviews of contracts, agreements, and other documents to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with MNO standards.
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures that promote effective governance and transparency.
  • Engage in research and analysis on legal matters affecting Indigenous peoples, preparing comprehensive reports and briefing materials.
  • Provide legal support to MNO Community Councils, addressing issues related to human resources and conflict resolution.
  • Facilitate training sessions for MNO staff on legal and policy matters to enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Manage requests for information from MNO citizens, ensuring adherence to confidentiality and privacy standards.
  • Participate in meetings with MNO leadership, preparing necessary documentation to support informed decision-making.
  • Travel to various communities as needed to represent MNO and engage with stakeholders.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A law degree (J.D. or LLB) and be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in a legal advisory role.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication abilities, both written and verbal.
  • A commitment to serving the Métis community and advancing Indigenous rights.

Preferred Attributes:

Knowledge of Indigenous policy issues and experience in conflict resolution will be considered an asset.
