About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as a Flood Management Specialist. In this role, you will play a key part in reducing the impacts of inland and coastal flooding in Nova Scotia.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify Data and Knowledge Gaps: Conduct thorough research to identify areas where data and knowledge are lacking, and develop strategies to address these gaps.
  • Develop Flood Hazard Assessments: Lead the development of comprehensive flood hazard assessments that consider equity and social, built, and natural climate vulnerabilities.
  • Provide Technical Expertise: Offer technical guidance to government and municipalities on understanding flood risks and options for adaptation.
  • Identify Opportunities for Flood Reduction: Identify and recommend opportunities to address flooding that align with government priorities.
  • Support Flood Risk Reduction Initiatives: Support or lead initiatives to reduce flood risks, such as climate and coastal plan actions.
  • Coordinate Efforts: Coordinate efforts across internal partners and collaborate with municipalities and other external partners to achieve shared goals.
  • Communicate Technical Information: Communicate complex technical information in accessible ways to diverse audiences.
  • Represent the Province: Represent the Province in external flood-related working groups and associations.
  • Project Management: Manage all aspects of project administration, including budgets, partnerships, evaluation, and reporting.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, such as water resources management or engineering, geophysical sciences, or urban/rural planning.
  • Experience: At least 6 years of experience in a related field, with a proven track record of success in flood management and adaptation.
  • Skills: Demonstrated experience using data, technical expertise, and other evidence to understand problems and identify potential solutions. Expert knowledge of coastal and inland flood mechanisms and risks. Ability to communicate complex technical information to diverse audiences.

Working Conditions

This role is primarily based in an office work environment, with opportunities for flexible work schedules, including a normal work week of 35 hours/week and 7 hours/day, as well as the possibility of a long weekend every three weeks under our Earned Day Off work plan.
