We are seeking an experienced and ambitious individual to join our team as a Head of Litigation, responsible for leading our litigation department and overseeing the performance of junior and intermediate associate lawyers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Supervision: Provide visionary leadership to the litigation department, overseeing the performance of junior and intermediate associate lawyers and reporting to the CEO and Executive team.
  • Mentorship & Coaching: Mentor and coach junior and intermediate associates, offering guidance on case strategy, legal research methodologies, and courtroom advocacy skills.
  • Performance Evaluations: Conduct regular performance evaluations in collaboration with the HR Manager and provide constructive feedback to facilitate team members' growth and development.
Case Management
  • Case Oversight: Oversee the management of all litigation matters handled by the department, ensuring cases are handled efficiently, effectively, and in accordance with client expectations.
  • Resource Allocation: Review case assignments and allocate resources appropriately to ensure optimal case outcomes and client satisfaction.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as a subject matter expert on complex litigation matters, providing strategic guidance and support to junior and intermediate associates as needed.
  • Complex Litigation Files: Will be assigned carriage of complex litigation files.
Client Relations
  • Client Relationships: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, serving as a trusted advisor and advocate for their legal needs.
  • Client Communication: Act as the primary point of contact for clients regarding litigation matters, providing regular updates on case developments and addressing any concerns or issues that may arise.
  • Cross-Selling Opportunities: Collaborate with the Principal lawyer, the executive team, and other practice areas within the firm to identify opportunities for cross-selling and delivering integrated legal solutions to clients.
Legal Research & Analysis
  • Legal Research: Stay abreast of developments in case law, legislation, and procedural rules relevant to the firm's litigation practice.
  • Guidance & Support: Provide guidance and support to junior and intermediate associates on legal research methodologies, case analysis, and the development of legal arguments.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure that all work product produced by the litigation department meets the highest standards of quality and accuracy.
Professional Development
  • Training Programs: Design and implement training programs and professional development initiatives to enhance the skills and expertise of junior and intermediate associate lawyers within the litigation department.
  • Culture of Continuous Learning: Foster a culture of continuous learning and growth, encouraging junior and intermediate associates to take on challenging assignments and expand their legal knowledge.
  • Leadership by Example: Lead by example, demonstrating a commitment to excellence, integrity, and professionalism in all aspects of legal practice.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Good Standing: Good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Experience: 10-20+ years of experience working at a law firm that strictly focuses on civil litigation in the areas listed under 'company description.'
  • Knowledge: In-depth and strong knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure and the Court of Justice Act, etc.
  • Published Cases: Significant examples of published cases, motions, endorsements, and any research work/papers/articles written on legal topics – would be an asset.
  • Work Environment: This is a full-time position performed on-site at our head office, with occasional availability to work remotely.
