POSITION OVERVIEW
As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team at the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), the Head of Communications plays a vital role in enhancing the operational effectiveness of the organization. This position is responsible for spearheading the development and execution of strategic communication and public relations initiatives that align with the CCES's overarching goals. The individual will provide strong leadership in media relations, content development, and management across diverse platforms, as well as in crisis communication. Collaboration with colleagues throughout the organization is essential to ensure unified communication efforts that accurately represent the CCES brand and bolster its public image. The Head of Communications will also lead the communications team and oversee the communications budget to achieve the desired objectives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Communication
- Formulate and supervise the execution of a comprehensive strategic communication plan that aligns with the organization's mission and strategic objectives;
- Adjust communication strategies in response to evolving circumstances, trends, and stakeholder feedback;
- Implement and manage communication strategies across various channels to enhance the visibility of the CCES's initiatives and foster trust in the brand;
- Oversee crisis communication and develop proactive strategies to mitigate potential issues;
- Support project teams across all strategic priority areas with communication efforts to amplify the reach and impact of the CCES's services;
- Create a consistent brand message and uphold brand integrity across all platforms;
- Collaborate with external communication, marketing, and design professionals;
- Supervise the production of digital, video, audio, and print content.
Media Relations
- Develop and implement a proactive media relations strategy that includes assisting CCES representatives with key messaging and identifying optimal timing, topics, and targets for media outreach;
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with Canadian media, key sector leaders, and senior communication officials;
- Serve as a spokesperson for both French and English media as necessary;
- Provide information and support to all press, media advisors, and other stakeholder groups;
- Manage responses to high-profile issues, advising the Executive Team on options for external messaging and collaborating with program staff to implement the chosen messaging.
Leadership of the Communications Team
- Oversee the daily operations of the communications team through the development of an annual operational plan;
- Provide leadership and mentorship to staff engaged in communication-related tasks;
- Conduct performance evaluations and recommend training and development opportunities for team members;
- Manage the communications team budget effectively.
Senior Leadership Participation
- Act as a member of the Senior Leadership Team;
- Contribute to team planning, policy formulation, decision-making, and problem-solving;
- Assist in securing and maintaining financial, human, and operational resources;
- Ensure proper administration and financial management of daily operations;
- Support the achievement of the CCES's mandate;
- Provide assistance to the Board of Directors and other committees as needed;
- Develop and maintain partnerships relevant to the CCES's mission;
- Represent the CCES with stakeholders as required;
- Attend meetings, conferences, and events as necessary.
Quality Management System
- Promote and support the implementation of the Quality Management System;
- Adhere to relevant quality system processes and recommend changes as appropriate;
- Identify potential risks and assist in managing risk mitigation strategies;
- Document stakeholder feedback in the Quality Database for tracking and follow-up.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director, Corporate Services and/or the CEO.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Proficiency in both French and English (written and spoken);
- Exceptional writing and editing skills in either language, preferably English;
- Demonstrated expertise in communication practices and channels;
- Ability to tailor communication styles to engage various target audiences;
- Strong storytelling skills with the ability to write for diverse audiences;
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field;
- At least 7 years of experience in a similar capacity;
- In-depth knowledge of social media platforms and marketing strategies;
- Familiarity with the amateur sport system in Canada is considered an asset;
- Outstanding organizational and time-management skills with meticulous attention to detail.
