About the Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled Recreation Therapist to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a member of our interdisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in providing a diverse range of interventions to clients and their families, enabling them to achieve their optimal level of functioning and health.

As a Recreation Therapist, you will utilize therapeutic intervention comprised of treatment, leisure education, and recreation participation to promote physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning of patients. You will assess and develop treatment plans regarding leisure opportunities and resources to improve functioning and independence, and reduce or eliminate the effects of illness or disability.

The successful candidate will be involved in quality improvement and evaluation activities to support continuous improvements in the provision of Therapeutic Recreation Services, as well as inter-professional team functioning for excellence in client care.

About You

We are looking for a candidate with a Baccalaureate degree in Recreation or Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation, and certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist with NCTRC. Experience in working with various populations/disability groups is preferred.

You will possess knowledge of leisure/recreation assessments, leisure education, and leisure counseling processes, as well as knowledge of various health conditions and their impact on health and well-being.

Effective counseling and verbal/written communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to set priorities and work independently. You will also demonstrate the ability to establish and promote good interpersonal relationships, select suitable activities, and work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide therapeutic interventions to clients and their families to promote optimal functioning and health
  • Assess and develop treatment plans regarding leisure opportunities and resources
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide high-quality patient care
  • Participate in quality improvement and evaluation activities to support continuous improvements in Therapeutic Recreation Services
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of best practices in Therapeutic Recreation
