Position Type: Administration - Regular

Employment Type: Full-Time

Work Schedule: Regular hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional travel as required.

Role Summary

The Associate Director, Finance plays a pivotal role in delivering financial management expertise to Douglas College. Reporting to the Director, Finance, this position encompasses a range of responsibilities including financial reporting in accordance with applicable accounting standards, management reporting for financial oversight, internal controls, external audits, and compliance with tax regulations. This role also involves monitoring financial performance and overseeing treasury functions, along with managing financial activities related to various educational programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation of timely and precise financial performance reports for relevant educational authorities.
  • Generate interim financial reports for college management and the governing financial committee.
  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and public sector accounting standards.
  • Collaborate with budgeting teams to ensure alignment with financial forecasts and assumptions.
  • Manage external client financial reporting to maintain integrity and accuracy.

Leadership and Management

  • Supervise and mentor finance managers and support staff, including recruitment, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Facilitate professional development opportunities for team members to enhance their skills.
  • Establish clear performance expectations to achieve strategic and operational goals.
  • Ensure adherence to organizational policies and service excellence standards.
  • Contribute to effective labor relations by managing collective agreements and consulting with HR.

Financial Oversight and Compliance

  • Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of tax obligations as mandated by government authorities.
  • Conduct financial analyses to support management in evaluating cost and profit centers.
  • Lead the accounting team through annual audits, ensuring timely completion of all required reports.
  • Maintain compliance with the college's financial management policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • A relevant university degree and a CPA designation, with an MBA considered an asset.
  • At least seven years of experience in a managerial role within a business or educational environment.
  • Experience in a unionized setting is preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop staff effectively.
  • Strong technical skills in financial systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office and ERP systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
