Postdoctoral Fellow in Forage Legume Genomics

Primary Objective: The aim of these postdoctoral fellow positions is to: 1) analyze genetic variation and structure within a global collection of Red Clover to develop an effective breeding strategy aimed at enhancing seed yield, biological nitrogen fixation, and disease resistance. 2) Investigate the genomic foundations of salt tolerance in alfalfa. Specific objectives include: a) characterizing extensive germplasm collections utilizing genomic methodologies and advanced phenotyping technologies (UAV). b) Evaluating genetic diversity to pinpoint populations with distinct genetic architectures. c) Identifying and developing molecular markers for the selection of salt-tolerant plants. d) Implementing genomic selection to enhance desirable traits. This research will be conducted through the Crop Development Centre and the Livestock Forage Center of Excellence at the University of Saskatchewan.

Nature of Work: Two positions are available for a duration of three years, contingent upon satisfactory performance during the initial evaluation period. The postdoctoral fellows will collaborate closely with Dr. Bill Biligetu's laboratory and associated partners to strategize, design, and execute research protocols related to the phenotyping and genotyping of red clover and alfalfa germplasm in various settings including field, greenhouse, and laboratory. Responsibilities will include data analysis, interpretation, presentation, and the preparation of scientific manuscripts. The candidates will also assist in report writing and supervise research activities conducted by students involved in the project.

Responsibilities: The postdoctoral fellows will oversee all facets of the research projects, working in close partnership with the Principal Investigator. Key responsibilities will encompass planning, designing, and executing research protocols, collecting and processing samples; managing data and performing statistical analyses, including bioinformatics analysis of complex sequence data; drafting manuscripts and reports; and delivering regular progress updates. The candidates will participate in regular meetings with the research team and provide support for additional field research projects as necessary.

Qualifications: A PhD in plant science, bioinformatics, or a related field obtained within the last five years is required, with a preference for candidates possessing experience in plant breeding and bioinformatics analysis.

Licenses: Candidates must be eligible to obtain a driver's license in Saskatchewan.

Experience: Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience in conducting molecular laboratory work and field experiments with crop plants. Proficiency in Python, R, or other bioinformatics software is highly desirable. Experience in analyzing large datasets, creating high-quality data visualizations, and publishing research findings in reputable peer-reviewed scientific journals is essential.

Skills: Candidates should exhibit a proven ability to establish and nurture relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and educational levels. The ability to effectively present research findings to seed growers and industry stakeholders is also required.
