Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Forage Legume Genomics
Objective: The primary objectives of this role are to: 1) explore the genetic diversity and structure of a global collection of Red Clover to establish an effective breeding program aimed at enhancing seed yield, biological nitrogen fixation, and disease resistance. 2) Investigate the genomic foundations of salt tolerance in alfalfa. Key tasks include: a) characterizing extensive germplasm collections utilizing genomic methodologies and precision phenotyping technologies (UAV). b) Evaluating genetic diversity to pinpoint populations with distinct genetic structures. c) Identifying and developing molecular markers for selecting salt-tolerant plants. d) Implementing genomic selection to enhance desirable traits. Research will be conducted through the Crop Development Centre and the Livestock Forage Center of Excellence at the University of Saskatchewan.
Work Environment: This position offers two 3-year appointments, contingent upon satisfactory performance during the initial evaluation period. The Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate closely with Dr. Bill Biligetu's laboratory and associated partners to devise, plan, and execute research protocols related to the phenotyping and genotyping of red clover and alfalfa germplasm in various settings including field, greenhouse, and laboratory. Responsibilities also encompass data analysis, interpretation, presentation, and manuscript preparation.
Responsibilities: The Postdoctoral Fellows will oversee all facets of the research projects and will work in close partnership with the Principal Investigator. Specific duties include: planning, designing, and executing research protocols; sample collection and processing; data management and statistical analysis, including bioinformatics of complex sequence data; manuscript and report writing; and delivering regular progress updates. Regular meetings with the research team will be essential. Additional support for other field research initiatives may be required.
Qualifications: A PhD in plant science, bioinformatics, or a related field obtained within the last five years is required, with a preference for candidates with experience in plant breeding and bioinformatics.
Licensure: Candidates must be eligible to obtain a Saskatchewan driver's license.
Experience: Successful candidates will have proven experience in conducting molecular laboratory work and field trials with crop species. Proficiency in Python, R, or other bioinformatics software is highly desirable. Experience in analyzing large datasets, generating high-quality data visualizations, and publishing research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals is essential.
Skills: Candidates should demonstrate the ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and educational levels. Additionally, they should possess strong presentation skills to effectively communicate research findings to seed producers and industry stakeholders.
