Position Overview

The University of Ottawa is seeking a dedicated professional to oversee all aspects of internal auditing within the institution. Reporting directly to the Chief Risk Officer, the successful candidate will ensure that all audit activities align with the University's strategic objectives and risk management policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Internal Audit Program: Evaluate internal controls, identify vulnerabilities, and propose enhancements. Develop and implement a comprehensive internal audit strategy that utilizes both internal and external resources as necessary. Collaborate with senior management to promote the significance of a robust internal audit function.
  • Audit Operations Oversight: Supervise financial operations to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of established internal controls. Conduct audits that include process documentation and forensic analysis to identify emerging issues.
  • Reporting: Lead the annual internal audit reporting process, analyzing findings and trends to provide strategic recommendations. Work closely with external auditors to ensure compliance and accuracy in reporting.
  • Investigations: Conduct thorough investigations into identified risks or policy violations. Utilize best practices in forensic accounting to draw conclusions and make impartial recommendations.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive initiatives for the ongoing enhancement of internal audit activities, ensuring quality control and assurance through training and process improvements.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, management, or a related discipline; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • A professional accounting designation is mandatory.
  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in audit, risk management, or related fields, ideally within a large organization.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Ability to simplify and communicate complex information effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in delivering presentations in both English and French.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Proven capability to foster collaborative relationships and influence stakeholders.
  • High ethical standards and sound business judgment.
  • Bilingual proficiency in French and English, both spoken and written.

Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as defined in Policy 129 – Covid-19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1, 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
