Lead Systems Administrator

The Lead Systems Administrator is responsible for overseeing a team within a hybrid computing environment. This role encompasses the distribution of tasks, coaching, onboarding, and scheduling of personnel, as well as aiding in troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues. The Lead is accountable for the daily management and operation of the enterprise server infrastructure and associated systems, which include file, print, application, web, messaging, and database systems, alongside essential infrastructure applications such as networking, storage, backup, and virtualized environments.

Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership and mentorship to team members, fostering skill development and effective management techniques. Direct the workflow of assigned personnel, ensuring timely responses and adherence to performance standards. Assess training needs and facilitate orientation for team members, tracking progress and addressing performance issues. Organize work assignments and maintain staffing schedules to ensure adequate coverage and efficient workflow. Manage the procurement of IT infrastructure equipment for research purposes, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and securing competitive pricing. Offer specialized technical guidance to scientific programs in all facets of IT infrastructure, including server design, installation, and security. Coordinate system upgrades and performance tuning to optimize server functionality and security. Document technical procedures and maintain system documentation, including backup schedules and disaster recovery plans. Participate in major problem-solving discussions and suggest improvements for network and service performance. Maintain communication with other IT teams and external partners to stay informed of developments in the field. Supervise the technical execution of projects undertaken by the team, ensuring effective resource utilization. Provide consulting on new systems acquisition and application implementation, preparing technical documentation to support decision-making. Stay updated on current trends in information systems through literature review and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, complemented by five years of relevant experience in a technical environment, including at least two years in a leadership capacity.

Skills and Knowledge

Proficient in Microsoft infrastructure tools and technologies, including Linux, VMware, and Windows server operating systems. In-depth knowledge of core Microsoft and Linux technologies, including design, implementation, and support functions. Strong experience in systems administration within large-scale environments, including backup and recovery processes. Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex information in an understandable manner. Ability to analyze operational challenges and propose innovative solutions. Proven track record in managing complex projects with strict timelines and budgets. Understanding of legislative obligations and commitments related to Indigenous rights and health care.
