Indigenous Education Assistant

The Hamilton Regional Indian Centre is seeking a highly motivated and culturally sensitive individual to fill the position of Educational Resource Assistant. This role is a key part of the Strengthening Hamilton's Aboriginal Education (SHAE) program, which aims to support the education and well-being of Indigenous students.
Key Responsibilities- Provide assistance to students and staff in the SHAE program, under the direction of the Executive Director or Designate.
- Work collaboratively with community organizations and Indigenous service providers to support the needs of students and families.
- Develop and maintain relationships with community members, Elders, and Traditional Knowledge Keepers to ensure culturally relevant support and resources.
- Assist with the development and implementation of educational programs and activities that promote Indigenous culture, language, and history.
- Provide support and guidance to students in areas such as academic achievement, personal growth, and social development.
- Collaborate with the education team to develop and implement strategies to address the impacts of trauma and promote community outreach.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills in Indigenous education and community support.
- 2-year post-secondary diploma in Education, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
- Experience working in a community organization and/or with Indigenous populations.
- Experience working with youth and families.
- Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture, history, and the impacts of trauma.
- Knowledge of Indigenous and non-Indigenous community services and supports.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and First Aid/CPR certification is an asset.
- Sufficient skills in the use of Microsoft Office applications and 365.
- High flexibility and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse environment.
- Valid driver's license with a clear driving record and access to reliable transportation is an asset.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
