About the Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a dedicated Geoscience Data Specialist to contribute to a vital project: converting scanned geological borehole data into digital records for the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS).

This role plays a crucial part in modernizing access to essential geological information. The AGS holds original Alberta Research Council coal borehole logs, which are invaluable for understanding the subsurface of Alberta. By transforming these logs into a digital format, we can unlock their full potential for groundwater studies, sediment and bedrock characterization, and mapping bedrock topography and sediment thickness.

Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Utilize specialized software (e.g., Esri ArcPro GIS) to locate and access borehole logs.
  • Meticulously review and document geological data such as depth, rock type, and supplementary information in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
  • Maintain an updated inventory of completed borehole logs within a GIS database.
  • Gather supplemental information like graphical geophysical data for future data conversion projects.
  • Ensure electronic documents are clear, complete, accurate, and readily available according to AER guidelines and regulations.

What We're Looking For

  • A high school diploma or equivalent education. Upstream Petroleum Certificate and/or Microsoft Office Suite Certification are considered assets.
  • 2 to 5 years of relevant experience, with a basic understanding of earth science or civil/environmental/geological engineering principles is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is essential, along with a willingness to learn new software applications.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and geological terminology and abbreviations is advantageous.
  • A collaborative approach to problem-solving, research, and the ability to maintain focus on repetitive tasks with meticulous attention to detail.
  • A process improvement mindset and an interest in implementing technology to enhance workflow efficiency.
