ROLE SUMMARY:

The Mechanical Supervisor will support the Mechanical Manager in the strategic planning, scheduling, and allocation of workforce resources for Freight Car Repair and Inspection tasks. This position is vital in ensuring that all maintenance and servicing activities are executed safely and effectively, adhering to the regulations set forth by the Company, the Association of American Railroads (AAR), and Transport Canada (TC). The role will require oversight of operations at multiple locations on a rotational basis.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate job briefings, end-of-shift discussions, and safety meetings to ensure compliance with safety protocols and procedures.
  • Document and address safety incidents and hazards, collaborating with the Mechanical Manager and Health and Safety Committee for timely corrective actions.
  • Drive performance by ensuring all team members understand business objectives and their respective responsibilities.
  • Maintain regular communication with management to ensure that Freight Car repair and servicing meet customer expectations.
  • Manage inventory levels and ordering processes through the SAP system, supporting cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with local union representatives, ensuring adherence to the collective agreement.
  • Engage in Consequence Leadership by providing both positive and constructive feedback to team members.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational productivity and effectiveness, supporting Lean principles.
  • Ensure compliance with AAR, TC standards, and CPKC policies in all repair and servicing activities.
  • Assist mechanical teams during train incidents, following the Emergency Response Plan guidelines.
  • Foster self-managed work teams by providing guidance and support to employees in shop and yard environments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or mechanical trade certification is required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of railway operations, including road, yard, freight car, and mechanical processes.
  • Familiarity with CPKC systems (CIM, TYES, Nexus, SAP, and Wreck Estimator) is advantageous.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Understanding of collective agreements and non-union policies.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and adaptability in diverse work environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and to accommodate shift work.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and resolve complex issues.
