Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Engineer and collaborating closely with the Engineering Manager, the Deputy Chief Operating Engineer plays a crucial role in overseeing operations, conducting preventative maintenance, troubleshooting issues, performing root cause analysis, and executing modifications and repairs for the powerhouse and its associated systems. This role is pivotal in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of Canada Royal Milk's powerhouse, adhering to all relevant regulations.

The Deputy Chief Operating Engineer will coordinate the activities within the powerhouse and utility systems. As a recognized leader, this position ensures that all operations are conducted safely, complying with food safety and quality standards while fostering a positive work environment.

In this role, you will engage in preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment modifications and repairs. A strong sense of motivation and initiative, along with the ability to collaborate effectively within a team, is essential. Flexibility to accommodate the demands of a 24-hour operational environment is also required.

Qualifications

Certificates: A valid 1st or 2nd Class Stationary Engineer Certificate (willingness to obtain a 1st Class Certificate is necessary) and a Refrigerator Operator Class 'A' Certificate.

Experience: A minimum of 5 years in a shift engineer role within a manufacturing setting.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Perform regular duties including, but not limited to, operating the power plant and associated equipment, conducting preventative and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, identifying improvement opportunities, and performing routine water analyses and inspections in compliance with Technical Safety and Standards Authority (TSSA) regulations.
  2. Manage equipment and systems under the Powerhouse jurisdiction, including boilers, water treatment, compressed air systems, wastewater treatment, refrigeration systems, and HVAC equipment.
  3. Utilize computerized maintenance management systems effectively.
  4. Analyze and document operational metrics and performance data.
  5. Provide mentorship and guidance to apprentices, laborers, and maintenance assistants.
  6. Respond to emergency situations as required.
  7. Ensure adherence to all regulatory and code requirements.
  8. Engage with regulatory bodies under the Chief Operating Engineer's direction as necessary.
  9. Act as a backup for the Waste Water Treatment Plant and cover shifts when needed.
  10. Maintain compliance with health, safety, Quality Assurance, and security protocols at all times.

In collaboration with the Chief Operating Engineer, assist in managing and overseeing the preventative maintenance and operational efficiency of the Powerhouse.

Contribute to the development of maintenance programs, work schedules, and necessary record-keeping.

Provide leadership and supervision to staff, offering work direction, performance feedback, and recommendations for training and development.

Foster a positive work environment by continuously enhancing team culture and promoting high levels of employee engagement.

Ensure plant operations comply with TSSA regulations.

Adhere to OSHA regulations and Quality Assurance protocols consistently.

Analyze instrument readings and address equipment malfunctions.

Troubleshoot and perform corrective actions or minor repairs as needed.

Maintain a daily log of operations, maintenance, and safety activities.

Perform any additional duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This position typically operates during standard office hours, Monday through Friday. However, due to the international nature of our business, flexibility in working hours may be required to accommodate various time zones, including potential evening and weekend hours.

The role encompasses both office and food manufacturing settings, with possible travel required within Canada and internationally.
