Position Overview

We are in search of a committed and knowledgeable professional to oversee the development and execution of a comprehensive safety program aimed at safeguarding our workforce.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Human Resources Manager, the Health and Safety Officer will ensure that health and safety protocols are established, communicated, and adhered to across the organization. This role also involves managing accommodation practices, return-to-work processes, and injury management to support ongoing employee welfare. The Health and Safety Officer holds the authority to halt operations if they are deemed unsafe, including situations involving impairment.

Community Engagement and Cultural Safety

Engagement with staff and stakeholders is essential to nurture a safety culture that honors First Nations values and traditions. The Health and Safety Officer will promote awareness of intergenerational trauma and its implications for health and safety practices, ensuring that safety initiatives and training incorporate First Nations knowledge and approaches to well-being.

Emergency Preparedness and Response

This role includes participation in emergency preparedness and incident command, collaborating with relevant divisions and the community. The Health and Safety Officer will also lead the Joint Health and Safety Committee, ensuring effective communication and resolution of safety concerns.

Documentation and Reporting

Maintaining accurate records is vital, including incident reports, hazard identifications, and training documentation. The Health and Safety Officer will provide recommendations based on systemic trends and advocate for improvements to existing systems.

Qualifications

Candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field, along with relevant professional certifications. A minimum of five years of experience in a similar role is required, preferably within a First Nations community or municipal setting. Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and a comprehensive understanding of WorkSafeBC regulations are essential.
