Position Overview

The Seabird Island Band is dedicated to creating a secure, healthy, and inclusive workplace. The role of the Health and Safety Officer is crucial in cultivating a robust safety culture that aligns with our commitment to employee welfare, adhering to WorkSafeBC standards and other regulatory requirements. We are in search of a committed and knowledgeable professional to oversee the development and execution of a comprehensive safety program aimed at safeguarding our workforce.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Human Resources Manager, the Health and Safety Officer will ensure that health and safety protocols are established, communicated, and adhered to across the organization. This role also involves managing accommodations, return-to-work processes, and injury management to promote ongoing employee wellbeing. The Health and Safety Officer has the authority to halt operations when unsafe practices are observed.

Community Engagement and Cultural Sensitivity

Engagement with staff and stakeholders is essential to foster a safety culture that honors First Nations values and traditions. The Health and Safety Officer will promote awareness of intergenerational trauma and its implications for health and safety practices.

Safety Monitoring and Risk Management

Regular risk assessments and audits will be conducted to identify potential hazards, with appropriate control measures recommended. The officer will also investigate incidents and near-misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.

Emergency Preparedness

Participation in emergency preparedness initiatives and incident command is required, along with leading the Joint Health and Safety Committee.

Documentation and Reporting

Maintaining comprehensive records, including incident reports and training documentation, is vital. The officer will also provide recommendations for policy improvements based on identified trends.

Qualifications

Candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field, along with relevant experience in health and safety management. Certification in health and safety is preferred, as well as a strong understanding of WorkSafeBC regulations.

Cultural Competency

A willingness to learn about First Nations cultures and contemporary issues affecting Indigenous peoples is essential. Experience working within Indigenous communities is highly valued.

Working Conditions

The role requires flexibility to adapt to various work environments, including fieldwork and office settings. A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are necessary for travel between locations.
