Role Summary

As a key member of the Zone Technical Execution (ZTE) division, the Capital Engineering team is tasked with the planning and execution of new and upgraded systems and capital assets at our manufacturing facilities across North America. Reporting to the Head of Engineering & Capital Execution, the Lead Engineer for Capital Projects and Portfolio Management will play a pivotal role in establishing strong connections with Manufacturing Pod Leads, Plant Operations, and various engineering teams, including Research and Development, Business Development, Quality, ORM, Finance, and Procurement.

In this role, you will guide and mentor engineering and technical personnel at assigned plants in all facets of capital project management and plant engineering. Your experience in influencing and collaborating across the organization will be essential.

You will engage in cross-functional Peer Reviews for significant capital projects (greater than $1MM) within the North American zone portfolio, which encompasses over 30 sites in the US and Canada, ensuring that projects are appropriately sized and designed for their intended purpose. It is crucial to clearly define and incorporate future Maintenance and Growth capital projects into Strategic Plans, Master Plans, and Annual Operating Plans (AOP).

Key Responsibilities

CAPEX Planning and Budgeting

  • Collaborate with Maintenance package owners (Food Safety & Quality, EHS, External Suppliers, FM Global, Roof, etc.) and work closely with Manufacturing and Supply Chain leaders to accurately define, prioritize, and budget capital projects in the AOP and Five-Year Strategic Plan.

Portfolio Management

  • Responsible for the health, compliance, and successful execution of all Maintenance and select Growth projects within the assigned portfolio.
  • Ensure that all work performed and equipment installed adheres to safety, effectiveness, and compliance with Kraft Heinz and relevant industry standards.
  • Mentor site Engineering and Capital Project Managers in lean construction practices, quality, safety, cost management, and delivery techniques.
  • Approve project change control requests and the use of contingency or supplemental funds.
  • Prepare and present portfolio status reports to Global and North American committees.
  • Collaborate with the Fixed Asset team to monitor and control Construction Work in Progress (CWIP).

Capital Appropriation Requests (CAR)

  • Act as the Engineering representative for all Technical Peer Reviews (TPR's) within the assigned portfolio.
  • Review and authorize emergency CAR requests from sites.

Management System

  • Conduct audits and health checks.
  • Collaborate with PMO and Global/International teams on updates to the Kraft Heinz Management System (KHMS).

Project Management Standards and Tools

  • Partner with PMO to drive continuous improvement in capital project management activities across all Kraft Heinz entities and initiate projects to enhance capital business processes.
  • Develop and disseminate best practices and key performance indicators (KPIs) to optimize CAPEX Management and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
  • Build, maintain, and oversee onboarding and training programs for site and network Engineering and Capital Project Managers.

Performance and Talent Management

  • Manage and mentor direct reports, providing ongoing feedback and conducting annual performance reviews.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, Technical Services, and HR partners to support team members in achieving their career aspirations. Provide insights, suggestions, and feedback on development plans to facilitate their growth.
  • Accountable for organizational change management and engaging cross-functional partners (HR) as necessary.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited institution or a related field is required.
  • Proven experience in engineering, project management, and/or technical leadership.
  • Advanced expertise in Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) Food Engineering principles, demonstrated through successful project and/or program implementations. Ability to assess the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering solutions.
  • Strong background in process and packaging equipment for the food industry and/or plant facility engineering and maintenance, including building construction, utilities, mechanical and electrical systems, ammonia refrigeration systems, electrical control systems, computer applications, facility support equipment, and water and wastewater systems.
  • Demonstrated capability to lead and manage cross-functional teams on large capital projects/programs valued at $20MM or more.
  • Understanding of capital financial and manufacturing Key Performance Indicators.
  • A team-oriented approach is essential.
