Position Overview

Mount Allison University is seeking a motivated and flexible individual for the role of Access Services Assistant within the R.P. Bell Library. This position reports to the Head of Access Services and Interlibrary Loan and involves collaboration within a dynamic team. The Access Services Assistant is responsible for the daily operations of the Access Services Department, ensuring exceptional service delivery to students, faculty, staff, and the public. Key responsibilities include maintaining accurate patron and bibliographic records, managing course reserves in both print and digital formats, organizing library collections, and engaging with colleagues on various projects and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Execute daily tasks within the Access Services department, including addressing patron inquiries related to accounts and circulation, managing stacks, and processing library materials throughout the circulation process.
  2. Act as the primary contact for library patrons, delivering friendly and informed service in person, online, and via phone; utilize sound judgment to resolve or escalate inquiries according to established protocols.
  3. Provide diverse services utilizing the Integrated Library System (ILS) in accordance with established policies.
  4. Oversee inventory management and ensure that non-traditional circulating items (such as laptops and chargers) are maintained in optimal condition.
  5. Offer basic troubleshooting assistance for library technologies, including computers and copiers.
  6. Safeguard patron privacy in all interactions.
  7. Assist in training and supervising student assistants.
  8. Manage the library's course reserve services, which includes processing course reserves and liaising with faculty regarding these materials.
  9. Accurately and securely handle financial transactions.
  10. Provide administrative support to librarians and archivists.
  11. Perform technical tasks related to cataloging library materials.
  12. Ensure the security and safety of library users and resources by opening and closing the building.
  13. Collect and maintain statistics on building usage.
  14. Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills

  1. A Library Technician's Diploma or a University degree, or a relevant combination of coursework and experience in a library setting, preferably in an academic context.
  2. Strong commitment to customer service and the ability to effectively engage with patrons, including students, staff, and faculty.
  3. Experience in digitizing materials is an asset.
  4. Proficient technical skills; familiarity with an Integrated Library System is highly preferred.
  5. Knowledge of library services, resources, and proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g., MS Word and Excel).
  6. Exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  7. Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and manage multiple tasks effectively.
