Position Overview

What is the role? The Senior Manager, Data Engineering - Digital and Client is responsible for guiding a team of both Senior and Junior Data Engineers to enhance and sustain the dependability of our data frameworks. This position demands robust development expertise, effective communication skills to mentor and guide junior staff, and a strategic mindset that contributes to the advancement and execution of RBC Insurance's Data Strategy. A comprehensive understanding of the business landscape across the organization, along with the underlying systems and architecture, is essential to ensure an exceptional client experience while fostering strong partnerships with internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Oversee the automation of processes, pinpointing growth opportunities, and establishing a center of excellence related to Digital and Client data.
  2. Create detailed project plans and accurate timelines for the completion of development, system testing, and implementation phases.
  3. Provide expert consulting on new initiatives of varying complexity.
  4. Evaluate, research, and analyze business and system requirements, exploring alternative solutions to recommend technology designs that align with business objectives and project outcomes, including component reusability, data sharing, and security considerations.
  5. Collaborate with internal partners to identify emerging trends, adopt new technologies, and implement best practices to cultivate a high-performing, diverse team.
  6. Lead a team of Data Engineers in constructing and maintaining data models and reporting systems, with varying deployment timelines based on product, systems, location, or partner relationships.
  7. Support and advocate for the development and execution of RBC Insurance's Data Strategy.
  8. Set the strategic direction and operational approach for the Data Engineering - Digital and Client team.
  9. Provide leadership through regular coaching, documented performance evaluations, and contribute to talent management and personal development initiatives.
Qualifications for Success

Essential Requirements:

  1. 5 to 10 years of extensive experience with large relational databases and significant data volumes across various formats.
  2. Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Finance, Computer Science, or a related field that enhances data analytics and reporting capabilities.
  3. Proficient in automation and data modeling.
  4. Expertise in SQL and Python programming, demonstrating advanced querying and data mining techniques.
  5. Experience in Talent Management processes, including recruitment, performance management, and development coaching.
  6. Knowledge of various testing tools, design methodologies, risk assessment, and quantification techniques.
  7. Familiarity with multiple programming languages, platforms, IT standards, methodologies, audit requirements, and middleware technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, Snowflake).
  2. Understanding of statistical methods and applied data validation techniques.
  3. Strong grasp of Dashboard Reporting methodologies.
  4. Knowledge of business lines, applications, and processes.
  5. Ability to select and develop talent, demonstrating sound judgment and discretion.
