Position Overview

Reporting to the Welding Engineering Manager, the Welding Engineering Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering engineering expertise for all vessel construction initiatives. This encompasses various projects, including those for the Royal Canadian Navy and upcoming Coast Guard vessels. The position is pivotal in overseeing the formulation and validation of welding methodologies, ensuring that welding quality is enhanced through the application of optimal processes and techniques.

Key Responsibilities

  • Spearhead the development of welding processes and generate relevant documentation. Enhance and optimize welding processes that are underperforming.
  • Introduce both traditional and innovative welding techniques and equipment.
  • Conduct failure analyses as necessary and propose solutions for complex welding challenges.
  • Create essential technical documents, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs).
  • Apply various material, welding, and testing codes and standards (e.g., ISO, Lloyds, DNV-GL, CSA, ASME, AWS).
  • Evaluate subcontractors' welding methodologies, processes, and documentation, including inspection reports.
  • Execute quality control audits related to welding at supplier locations and assist with welding-related issues.
  • Coordinate and oversee Procedure Qualification Record tests, including the preparation of WPS/PQR documentation.
  • Foster relationships with suppliers, clients, and classification societies while collaborating with other departments to enhance welding quality.
  • Ensure that specific contractual welding requirements for projects are identified and met.
  • Provide guidance on the acquisition of new equipment and develop technical specifications.
  • Prepare technical papers for publication and contribute to various Research and Development (R&D) initiatives.
  • Attend formal inspections with clients and regulatory bodies, documenting any non-conformities and reporting results to supervisors and the Quality Department.
  • Conduct daily in-process quality inspections of trade-specific work and communicate findings to responsible supervisors.
  • Review new construction models and drawings from a welding specialist perspective, offering support to Design and Engineering teams.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Registration with EGBC.
  • A degree in Welding Engineering or Metallurgy (or equivalent).
  • At least 4 years of experience in welding engineering within a large manufacturing setting, ideally in the shipbuilding sector.
  • Certification as a CSA W178.2 Level 1 or 2 Welding Inspector (or an equivalent international certification such as AWS CWI) is advantageous.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of shipbuilding welding procedures, including but not limited to SMAW, FCAW, MCAW, GMAW, SAW, GTAW, and stud welding.
  • Familiarity with international, class, and Canadian material, welding, and testing codes, rules, and standards (e.g., ISO, Lloyds, DNV-GL, CSA, ASME, ASTM, AWS).
  • Proficiency in welding procedures (PQR, WPS, and WPDS).
  • Capability to operate a welding applications laboratory.
  • Proven experience in evaluating weld test specimens, including bend tests, macro-etch specimens, and tensile tests.
  • Demonstrated involvement in Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office suite, Replicon, and JD Edwards P2P.
  • Ability to interpret specifications, drawings, and 3D models.
  • Competence in developing welding procedures.
  • Solid understanding of quality control and inspection processes.
  • Proven ability to formulate Quality Plans and Inspection and Test Plans.
  • Strong technical skills, particularly in quality techniques and their application.
  • Eligibility to obtain Industrial Security clearance.
