Position Overview

Reporting to the Welding Engineering Manager, the Welding Engineering Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering welding engineering expertise to various vessel construction projects. This encompasses support for naval vessels and future Coast Guard ships, including new construction initiatives. The role involves overseeing the formulation and validation of welding procedures while collaborating with multiple departments to enhance welding quality through effective processes and methodologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directs the development of welding processes and generates relevant documentation. Enhances underperforming welding techniques.
  • Applies both traditional and innovative welding methods and equipment.
  • Conducts failure analysis as necessary and proposes solutions for complex welding challenges.
  • Develops technical documentation such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs).
  • Implements various material, welding, and testing codes and standards (e.g., ISO, Lloyds, DNV-GL, CSA, ASME, AWS).
  • Reviews and assesses subcontractors' welding procedures and documentation, including inspection reports.
  • Performs quality control audits related to welding at supplier locations or assists in resolving welding issues.
  • Coordinates and oversees Procedure Qualification Record tests, including the preparation of WPS/PQR documentation.
  • Fosters relationships with suppliers, clients, and classification societies while collaborating with other departments to enhance weld quality.
  • Ensures that project-specific contractual welding requirements are identified and met.
  • Advises on the acquisition of new equipment and formulates technical specifications.
  • Prepares technical papers for publication.
  • Supports various tasks and projects within the Welding Centre of Excellence.
  • Investigates new welding technologies and trends, assessing their applicability to improve existing processes.
  • Conducts experimental welding to evaluate new equipment and techniques for potential integration.
  • Contributes to a range of Research and Development (R&D) initiatives.
  • Participates in formal inspections with clients and regulatory bodies, documenting non-conformities and reporting results to supervisors and the Quality Department.
  • Executes daily in-process quality inspections of welding-related work, documenting and communicating findings to supervisors.
  • Reviews new construction models and drawings from a welding specialist perspective, providing support to Design and Engineering teams.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Registration with EGBC.
  • A degree in Welding Engineering or Metallurgy (or equivalent).
  • At least 4 years of post-secondary experience in welding engineering within a large manufacturing setting, preferably in shipbuilding.
  • CSA W178.2 Level 1 or 2 Welding Inspector certification (or equivalent such as AWS CWI) is advantageous.
  • Extensive knowledge of shipbuilding welding procedures, including shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), flux core arc welding (FCAW), and others.
  • Familiarity with international, class, and Canadian material, welding, and testing codes, rules, and standards.
  • Understanding of welding procedures (PQR, WPS, and WPDS).
  • Capability to operate a welding applications laboratory.
  • Proven experience in evaluating weld test specimens.
  • Demonstrated experience in Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to interpret specifications, drawings, and 3D models.
  • Competence in developing welding procedures.
  • Solid understanding of quality control and inspection processes.
  • Proven ability to formulate Quality Plans and Inspection and Test Plans.
  • Strong technical skills with an understanding of quality techniques and their application.
  • Ability to obtain Industrial Security clearance.
