Position Overview

The Senior Transportation Director, Rail will oversee the domestic transportation division (road and rail), collaborating closely with sales, operational, and administrative teams as we expand our footprint in Canada (Quebec, Ontario, Maritimes) and the United States. This director will mentor and guide a dedicated team of professionals reporting directly to them. A strong emphasis will be placed on maintaining exceptional customer service and performance during a period of significant industry growth; this is a critical aspect of the role.

In charge of managing the transportation of millions of tons of materials from over 40 locations across North America annually, the Director of Domestic Transportation North America will play a pivotal role in shaping future growth within the organization and adapting the department to the evolving market landscape. The incumbent will consistently seek opportunities to enhance efficiencies for customer and employee satisfaction, cost-effectiveness, performance, and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

AIM is experiencing substantial growth, and the director must ensure adherence to standardized processes. A significant focus must be placed on customer service, engaging with clients, and expanding AIM's customer base through service enhancements. These service objectives must be achieved while keeping departmental costs aligned with the budget and business strategy.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of AIM, the incumbent will collaborate with all internal stakeholders (trading team, commercial and administrative) and upper management to optimize departmental performance in support of the company's commercial initiatives.

The candidate will also liaise with external stakeholders to guarantee that deliveries to customers are executed optimally and in accordance with sales agreements.

Primary Focus Areas:

Rail Operations:
  • Supervise rail fleet operations teams, mentoring and developing a network of service providers across North America.
  • Conduct general management and strategic assessments for the railway transportation division (2,500 company-owned railcars).
  • Ensure optimal utilization of company assets while strategically fulfilling sales orders.
  • Address service failures and devise effective solutions.
  • Lead negotiations regarding rates and services with both current and prospective rail service providers.
  • Establish and implement KPIs and controls.
  • Serve as the railway transportation advisor to commercial and operational managers, as well as other department heads and senior management.
  • Initiate regular meetings with service providers and internal customers to foster and maintain robust relationships.
  • Ensure the commercial department is equipped with accurate and up-to-date railway information and forecasts.
Third-Party Trucking:
  • Manage contract execution and vendor relations with third-party trucking services.
  • Assist in cultivating new networks or relationships with vendors.
  • Undertake special projects or additional duties as assigned by senior management.
Qualifications

Candidate Profile:

This position requires a motivated and organized individual who thrives in a goal-oriented and entrepreneurial business environment. The incumbent will have the opportunity to observe, document, build, analyze, and enhance our railway transportation practices, demonstrating a desire and ability to engage with diverse groups.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in business, logistics, or supply chain management.
Experience, Competencies, and Attributes:
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in logistics with direct railway exposure.
  • A proven track record of senior leadership and decision-making in fast-paced, high-growth settings.
  • Strong business acumen and problem-solving abilities, with analytical and creative thinking skills, adaptable to ambiguity and change.
  • Experience in change management and project management.
  • Familiarity with railway transport regulations and administrative requirements is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication abilities.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French is required.
