Position Overview

The Senior Transportation Director, Rail will oversee the domestic transportation division (road and rail), collaborating closely with sales, operational, and administrative teams as we expand our presence in both Canada and the United States. This role involves coaching and mentoring a dedicated team of professionals. A strong emphasis will be placed on maintaining exceptional customer service and performance amidst significant industry growth, which is a critical aspect of this position.

Managing the transportation of millions of tons of materials from over 40 locations across North America annually, the Director of Domestic Transportation North America will play a pivotal role in shaping future growth within the organization and adapting the department to the evolving market landscape. The incumbent will continuously seek opportunities to enhance efficiencies for customer and employee satisfaction, cost-effectiveness, performance, and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

AIM is experiencing substantial growth, and the director must ensure adherence to standardized processes. A strong focus on customer service is essential, as is the need to expand AIM's clientele through service enhancements. These service requirements must be executed while keeping departmental costs aligned with the budget and business strategy.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of AIM, the incumbent will collaborate with all internal stakeholders (trading team, commercial and administrative), as well as upper management, to optimize departmental performance in support of the company's commercial initiatives.

The candidate will also engage with external stakeholders to ensure timely deliveries to consumers in accordance with sales agreements.

Primary Focus Areas:

Rail Operations:
  • Oversee rail fleet operations teams, mentoring and developing a network of service providers throughout North America.
  • Conduct general management and strategic assessments for the railway transportation division (2,500 company-owned railcars).
  • Ensure optimal utilization of company assets while strategically fulfilling sales orders.
  • Address service failures and devise effective solutions.
  • Lead negotiations regarding rates and services with both current and prospective rail service providers.
  • Establish and implement KPIs and controls.
  • Serve as the railway transportation advisor to commercial and operational managers, as well as other department heads and senior management.
  • Initiate regular meetings with service providers and internal clients to cultivate and maintain robust relationships.
  • Ensure the commercial department is equipped with accurate and up-to-date railway information and forecasts.
Third-Party Trucking:
  • Manage contract execution and vendor relationships with third-party trucking services.
  • Assist in establishing new networks or partnerships with vendors.
  • Undertake special projects or additional responsibilities as assigned by senior management.
Qualifications:

Candidate Profile:

This role demands a motivated and organized individual who excels in a goal-oriented and entrepreneurial business environment. The incumbent will have the opportunity to observe, document, build, analyze, and enhance our railway transportation practices while engaging with diverse groups.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in business, logistics, or supply chain management.
Experience and Skills:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in logistics with direct railway exposure.
  • Proven senior leadership and decision-making experience in fast-paced, high-growth settings.
  • Strong business acumen and problem-solving capabilities, with an analytical and creative mindset, adaptable to ambiguity and change.
  • Experience in change management and project management.
  • Familiarity with railway transport regulations and administrative requirements is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Strong communication abilities.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French is required.
