About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Senior Transportation Director to lead our domestic transportation department, focusing on rail and road operations. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing the transportation of millions of tons of materials across North America, ensuring superior customer service and performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the domestic transportation department, working closely with sales, operational, and administrative teams to drive growth and excellence.
  • Coach and mentor a team of professionals, developing their skills and expertise to achieve departmental goals.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve efficiencies, customer satisfaction, cost, performance, and safety.
  • Manage the transportation of materials from over 40 locations in North America, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including trading teams, commercial, and administrative departments, to maximize departmental performance.
  • Work with external stakeholders to ensure optimal delivery of materials to consumers, in accordance with sales contracts.
Key Priorities
  • Railway:
    • Supervise rail fleet operations teams, mentoring and developing a network of service providers within North America.
    • General management and strategic review for the railway transportation department (2500 company-owned railcars).
    • Oversee optimal utilization of company assets, ensuring sales orders are fulfilled strategically.
    • Troubleshoot service failures and develop solutions.
    • Lead rate and service negotiations with current and new rail service providers.
    • Develop and implement KPIs and controls.
    • Act as the railway transportation advisor to commercial and operational managers, as well as other department heads and upper management.
    • Initiate periodic meetings with service providers and internal customers, developing and maintaining strong and sustainable relationships.
    • Ensure the commercial department is up to date with accurate and current railway information and forecasts.
  • 3rd Party Trucking:
    • Execute contracts and manage vendors for 3rd party trucking.
    • Assist in developing new networks or relationships with vendors.
    • Carry out special projects or other duties assigned by senior management.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in business, logistics, or supply chain management.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in logistics, with direct railway exposure.
  • Demonstrated senior leadership and decision-making track-record in fast-paced, high-growth environments.
  • Pronounced business acumen and problem-solving skills, analytical and creative thinker, adaptable and comfortable with ambiguity and change.
  • Experience in change management and project management.
  • Experience with railway transport regulations and administrative requirements preferred but not required.
  • Excellent sense of organization.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Bilingual - English and French required.
