Job Summary

The Government of Northwest Territories is seeking a skilled Traditional Addictions Counsellor to provide culturally relevant addictions services to inmates at the South Mackenzie Correctional Centre. As a key member of the Case Management Team, you will work collaboratively with Elders, Community Corrections, Social Workers, and Community Addictions Counsellors to deliver holistic and trauma-informed care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide addictions counselling and facilitate group programs from an Indigenous knowledge foundation.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners to ensure culturally relevant services.
  • Conduct assessments and develop treatment plans that address the unique needs of Indigenous offenders.
  • Collaborate with the Case Management Team to ensure seamless service delivery.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance cultural competence and addictions knowledge.
Requirements
  • Diploma in a Social Science related field and 2 years of experience in an addictions related field, or a certificate in addictions counselling and 3 years of experience in an addictions related field.
  • Specialized knowledge of addictions, addictions models, and addictions counselling.
  • Knowledge of traditional values, customs, and ideology of the Indigenous peoples of the NWT.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • First aid and CPR certification, and a class 4 driver's license.
