Key Contributions:

The Partnership Lead for Indigenous Rights and Climate Change plays a crucial role in steering a multi-year initiative focused on Indigenous rights and climate action across Canada and the LAC region. This position serves as the main liaison and relationship manager with Indigenous collaborators and co-signatories in Canada, ensuring that the project is co-managed with a strong emphasis on Indigenous governance and rights. The lead not only aids in the establishment and facilitation of governance frameworks but also oversees the execution of project activities. This includes integrating Indigenous data sovereignty and governance principles, ensuring adherence to donor requirements, and enhancing capacity development for Indigenous collaborators. Additionally, this role will promote knowledge exchange and manage reporting, aligning project operations with Indigenous methodologies and viewpoints.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Strengthen and enhance relationships with Indigenous leaders and stakeholders.
  • Assist Indigenous partners in comprehending and navigating donor requirements.
  • Champion the inclusion of Indigenous inherent rights, governance frameworks, and knowledge systems in all decision-making processes.
  • Facilitate capacity development in financial reporting and monitoring, customized to the needs of Indigenous partners.
  • Build and sustain relationships with Metis and Inuit partners to engage in the sub-granting process.

Project Execution and Capacity Development:

  • Collaborate with Indigenous leaders to formulate and execute project plans, including budgeting and forecasting.
  • Encourage effective collaboration with Indigenous partners and governance frameworks.
  • Provide specialized training to Indigenous partners on financial reporting and monitoring systems.
  • Oversee project budgets to ensure compliance with financial standards.
  • Facilitate regular project update meetings, emphasizing partner-led management and respect for Indigenous rights.
  • Maintain project records within organizational systems.
  • Monitor project budgets to ensure acceptable spending rates within compliance parameters.
  • Prepare donor reports and reports for Indigenous leaders and partners.
  • Work with Gender Equality Advisors to incorporate gender-responsive strategies in project planning and execution.
  • Collaborate with Gender Equality Advisors to ensure gender equality principles are integrated into Indigenous data governance frameworks.
  • Partner with Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning Advisors to ensure compliance with the Results-based Management Framework.

Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Governance:

  • Develop and implement data management protocols that respect Indigenous data sovereignty principles.
  • Work with Indigenous partners to establish guidelines for data collection, storage, and dissemination that align with their governance and cultural practices.
  • Ensure all project data activities comply with Indigenous data governance policies.
  • Educate team members and partners on the significance and implementation of Indigenous data sovereignty principles.

Knowledge Sharing and Advocacy:

  • Share insights on integrating Indigenous rights into project management.
  • Encourage knowledge sharing among partners.
  • Facilitate collaborative learning initiatives focused on gender equality, working with Gender Equality Advisors and Indigenous partners to co-create programs.

Donor Interface and Reporting:

  • Act as a bridge between Indigenous partners and donor compliance specialists.
  • Ensure accurate reporting to donors that incorporates Indigenous perspectives.

Qualifications:

  • A post-secondary degree or equivalent experience in Indigenous Studies, Environmental Science, Development, Social Work, or Anthropology.
  • 3-5 years of experience working with Indigenous communities, particularly in relation to climate change.
  • Experience working with or for Indigenous communities; international experience is preferred.
  • Proven project management experience, especially in Indigenous-led initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities and leaders.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous rights, governance, and data sovereignty principles.
  • Experience in financial reporting and compliance with donor requirements.
  • Experience implementing gender-responsive approaches in project management within Indigenous contexts.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, rights, and governance systems.
  • Knowledge of climate change issues affecting Indigenous communities.
  • Familiarity with donor granting, reporting, and evaluation systems.
  • Understanding of gender dynamics within Indigenous communities and their intersections with climate change.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to manage diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work within culturally safe approaches.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in project management and data management tools.
