Canada Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Full time
Postdoctoral Researchers and Graduate Students - Climate Science Initiative
We are seeking applications for several postdoctoral and graduate student roles to contribute to a pioneering satellite project focused on climate science.

The successful candidates will engage in advanced research in weather prediction, climate simulation, and satellite data interpretation, playing a vital role in the scientific advancement of a new Earth-observing satellite.

As part of a collaborative effort in monitoring climate change, Canada will provide three innovative instruments to be integrated into a NASA-led satellite mission.

The selected individuals will join a dedicated Science Development Team funded by a national space agency, working alongside a consortium of universities to perform essential scientific development tasks that enhance the understanding and applications of satellite measurements.

A total of multiple positions are available, including both postdoctoral researchers and graduate students.

Available Positions:
One postdoctoral researcher and one graduate student for each of the following research objectives:

Research Objective 1:

This project will analyze thermodynamic and radiation anomalies during extreme weather events, utilizing climate and radiative transfer modeling techniques.

Research Objective 2:

This study will explore methodologies for satellite data comparisons through trajectory hunting techniques, assessing their applicability to satellite measurements.

Research Objective 3:

This research will focus on developing optimal algorithms for satellite detection of snowfall and snow accumulation in northern regions, employing instrument simulators and machine learning approaches.

Research Objective 4:

This project will evaluate the feedback mechanisms of Arctic clouds within the Canadian climate model, particularly concerning the representation of black carbon.

Interested candidates for the graduate positions are encouraged to reach out to the leads of the respective research projects of interest.

Applicants should submit a recent academic transcript, an updated resume, and a concise statement detailing their research experience and interests.

For further information, please refer to the relevant academic institutions' websites.

To be eligible for the postdoctoral roles, candidates must possess a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, physics, or a related field, obtained within a specified timeframe. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to conduct independent scientific research and possess experience in analyzing model and/or satellite datasets, as well as proficiency in programming languages such as Fortran, Matlab, or Python on Linux systems.

Applicants may apply for one or more of the available research projects but are strongly encouraged to clearly indicate their primary area of interest in their application.
