Position Overview:
Keewaytinook Okimakanak Health is dedicated to providing mental health counselling, support, and intervention services tailored for First Nation children and youth from various communities. These communities are often remote, primarily accessible by air transport, with some seasonal road access. The Choose Life Mental Wellness Counsellor (CLMWC) role is integral to the K.O. Mental Health Team, involving travel to First Nations communities, frequently via small aircraft, to deliver essential counselling services to children, youth, and families. The CLMWC's mission is to address the holistic wellness needs of our youth, offering guidance, crisis intervention, group therapy, and case management services. Collaboration with community leadership and resources is a key aspect of this role, along with capacity-building efforts. Additionally, the CLMWC may provide support to community members off-reserve and through virtual platforms when not travelling.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Counselling Psychology, or a related discipline.
  • Registration with a recognized professional body, such as the College of Social Workers or the College of Registered Psychotherapists, is advantageous.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a clinical setting working with children, youth, and families is preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of trauma-informed care, family systems theory, crisis intervention techniques, and therapeutic modalities including individual, family, and group therapy.
  • Experience in assessing high-risk clients and implementing appropriate responses.
  • Familiarity with mandatory reporting obligations.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate group therapy sessions.
  • Holistic approach to wellness, emphasizing community strengths.
  • Established self-care strategies to maintain personal well-being.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with community members and partners.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and digital communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and time management abilities.
  • Self-motivated individual capable of working independently and collaboratively.
  • Understanding of First Nation culture, history, and social conditions in remote communities is a plus.
  • Knowledge of traditional Indigenous healing practices is beneficial.
  • Previous experience with First Nations communities is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate in a First Nations dialect is a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the Choose Life Mental Wellness/IDS Coordinator and Mental Health Lead, the CLMWC will:

  • Travel regularly to K.O. communities to provide counselling, support, crisis management, family therapy, and group work as needed.
  • Visit other K.O. office locations as required.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and case discussions.
  • Conduct mental health assessments and assist community members in creating personalized holistic wellness plans.
  • Evaluate risk factors and develop safety plans in collaboration with community members and their support networks.
  • Implement therapeutic strategies to help community members build skills for managing their challenges.
  • Focus on recovery and behavior modification during sessions.
  • Promote harm reduction strategies within the community.
  • Regularly assess community members' progress and adjust interventions accordingly.
  • Coordinate care and collaborate with community and regional resources.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of clinical care.
  • Ensure active case management and timely closure of inactive files.
  • Adhere to confidentiality and integrity standards for client records.
  • Follow reporting requirements as necessary.
  • Lead group therapy sessions and preventative mental wellness workshops.
  • Provide updates to relevant stakeholders on community member progress.
  • Engage in regular supervision meetings for case reviews and professional development.
  • Prepare work plans to ensure timely service delivery to communities.
  • Participate in ongoing education related to mental wellness.
  • Develop and deliver presentations and group activities as requested.
  • Foster positive working relationships with community mental health workers and other support staff.
  • Assist with pandemic-related support initiatives as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
