Counsellor - Student Mental Health Support

University of Toronto seeks a dedicated and compassionate Counsellor to provide vital mental health support to our diverse student population.

In this role, you will deliver individual counselling sessions within a short-term framework, utilizing evidence-based practices to empower students facing various challenges. Your expertise in trauma-informed care and cultural competency will be instrumental in creating a safe and inclusive environment for all.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide confidential and empathetic counselling services to students experiencing mental health concerns, including those related to trauma or PTSD.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand student needs and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Facilitate group workshops and training sessions on relevant mental health topics for staff and students.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and community resources to ensure holistic support for students.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records in accordance with ethical guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Counselling Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the relevant professional body.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver training and workshops to staff and students.
  • Prior cultural competency training required.
  • Prior training and focus of practice in working with individuals who have experienced trauma or have been diagnosed with PTSD.
  • Good judgment and sensitivity, flexibility and resourcefulness.
  • Strong counselling, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work within a short-term model of counselling, with prior experience with same-day counselling.
  • Non-judgmental attitude.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to exercise patience, tact, and discretion.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to collaborate and liaise with, equity-seeking student and campus organizations.

Assets:

  • Life coaching, mindfulness-based therapies, and alternative evidence-based therapies.
  • Familiarity with Stepped Care.
  • Prior experience working with post-secondary students and knowledge of university and community mental health resources.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record keeping.
