Position Overview:

The Accessibility Services Wellness Counsellor plays a crucial role in supporting the mental health and wellness of students with diagnosed mental health disabilities. This position involves providing individual and group counselling, facilitating workshops, and conducting outreach initiatives under the guidance of the Lead Counsellor within the Health & Counselling Centre (HCC).

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Delivering clinical counselling and psychotherapy tailored to students' needs while making appropriate referrals to additional resources.
  2. Creating and implementing treatment plans utilizing evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
  3. Designing and developing materials suitable for group counselling sessions and intake processes.
  4. Independently initiating and executing new programs and initiatives to enhance student support.
  5. Leading seminars and workshops aimed at promoting mental health awareness and resilience.
  6. Staying updated on advancements in assessment and psychotherapeutic practices.
  7. Acting as a knowledgeable resource for colleagues in the field.
Essential Qualifications:
  1. Master's Degree in Social Work, Counselling, or a related field, with current membership in a recognized health profession.
  2. A minimum of five years of full-time clinical counselling experience in a community mental health setting.
  3. In-depth knowledge of mental health issues, including behavioral challenges, conflict resolution, and trauma-informed care.
  4. Experience working with university-aged students is essential.
  5. Understanding the impact of violence on individuals with disabilities in higher education contexts.
  6. Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to work with a diverse student population.
  7. Strong communication, organizational, and crisis intervention skills.
  8. Ability to facilitate group sessions effectively.
  9. Good judgment, sensitivity, and the capacity to work autonomously.
  10. Commitment to enhancing the overall student experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Experience in a university or college setting is advantageous.
  2. Familiarity with life coaching and alternative therapeutic approaches is a plus.
  3. Prior involvement in an interdisciplinary clinic is beneficial.
  4. Knowledge of electronic medical records systems is an asset.
  5. Awareness of community mental health resources is preferred.
