The Indigenous Health Navigator plays a crucial role in enhancing the integration of existing support systems and advocacy services provided by community partners and regional health authorities. This position is dedicated to assisting Indigenous communities and organizations in accessing suitable healthcare services. The Navigator serves as a vital resource for Indigenous clients and healthcare professionals, ensuring that care is delivered in a culturally respectful and client-focused manner. This role also promotes the enhancement of healthcare services through the implementation of cultural safety and humility training for staff within the health authority.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver consultative and navigational support to patients referred to health programs, ensuring cultural interpretation and health literacy services are accessible.
- Assist patients in their interactions with healthcare providers, including physicians and nursing staff.
- Facilitate the coordination of services for patients within the designated healthcare region.
- Manage client referrals between interagency partners, Indigenous communities, and various health services.
- Provide support within the healthcare system by establishing and maintaining relationships with Indigenous clients to evaluate their needs for culturally appropriate care.
- Guide clients in understanding and navigating healthcare services effectively.
- Advocate for patient needs within the healthcare framework and collaborate with community health organizations to enhance patient care.
- Serve as a resource for healthcare providers regarding the delivery of culturally safe care practices.
- Coordinate spiritual care requests and access to sacred spaces within the healthcare environment to honor Indigenous beliefs and practices.
Qualifications:
Preference will be given to Indigenous candidates. A diploma or degree in a relevant health discipline, along with one to three years of recent experience in Indigenous healthcare, is preferred.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Proven experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations, with a deep understanding of their demographics, languages, cultures, and traditions.
- Familiarity with the healthcare system and community resources available in the region.
- Knowledge of cultural safety and competency in healthcare settings.
- Awareness of the impacts of Canadian colonization and Indigenous-specific racism on health and wellness.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Commitment to understanding and engaging with reports related to Indigenous Peoples.
- Dedication to fostering meaningful reconciliation efforts in Canada.
- Awareness of the social, economic, political, and historical factors affecting Indigenous communities.
