Position Overview

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is seeking a Senior Vice President for Research Initiatives.

In this pivotal role, reporting directly to the President & Chief Executive Officer, the Senior Vice President, Research is tasked with spearheading the modernization of a premier research institute that encompasses leading global researchers and conducts comprehensive research across the entire spectrum of healthcare. As a vital member of the Senior Executive Team, this position carries shared responsibility for achieving the strategic goals of the organization and ensuring excellence in research throughout VCH, while also overseeing the integration of research into clinical practice to enhance care quality.

With substantial internal backing for advancing research within VCH and fostering a culture of innovation, the Senior Vice President will have executive oversight of the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI), including its strategic direction, operational management, governance, and overall mission. This role is instrumental in promoting a culture of discovery and innovation across VCH's diverse population and extensive service area, which uniquely positions the organization for impactful research and implementation.

The successful candidate will cultivate collaborative relationships with the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine, a globally recognized institution, and serve as a key representative for VCH's research and academic initiatives at provincial, national, and international levels. They will champion a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge dissemination throughout VCH, advocating for systemic transformational change, while also enhancing the visibility and significance of research externally and securing funding for both new and ongoing research projects.

The ideal candidate is a distinguished scientific leader with a proven history of leveraging research opportunities at a systemic level to improve patient and client care outcomes. They possess the ability to translate a strategic vision into actionable plans and support their team in achieving these objectives. With a humble and collaborative approach, the Senior Vice President brings a robust network of scientific connections and a track record of establishing successful partnerships in transformative scientific contexts. A confident communicator, they are adept at engaging diverse audiences, from senior executives to large academic institutions and funding bodies.

In addition, this leader has experience in guiding professional teams through significant transitions while overseeing strategic development and managing the organization’s financial resources.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Doctoral degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent) in a relevant medical or life sciences field.
  • Master's degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, or a related health discipline.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of senior leadership experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating research programs or service delivery systems, alongside leading major service integration and change initiatives, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Eligibility for a faculty appointment at UBC or SFU.
  • A strong record of significant research accomplishments, with experience in evaluating complex healthcare systems and building innovative, sustainable, quality services that align with organizational strategy.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to enhance service delivery with a focus on diversity and inclusion.
  • Commitment to recognizing and supporting diversity at all engagement stages, with an understanding of the challenges faced by equity-seeking groups.
  • Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications and collaborative research with local, regional, national, and international stakeholders, along with successful competitive research grant applications.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills capable of inspiring teams, peers, and partners at the system level.
  • Experience in overseeing complex research projects, including the management of scientific and support personnel.
  • Strong understanding of relevant accreditation standards, provincial legislation, health statutes, and regulations.
  • Experience in shaping organizational vision and leading programs and teams both operationally and strategically, including medical governance, research, and academic affairs.
  • Knowledge of structures and leadership roles that support patient-centered frameworks.
  • Effective collaboration with internal and external partners to develop, manage, and evaluate programs and services, considering patient/client needs and service delivery interrelationships.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of legislative policy development and processes at various government levels to ensure informed decision-making.
  • Strong leadership, strategic thinking, problem-solving, and innovation skills to develop effective strategies and achieve organizational goals.
  • Sound business acumen to manage fiscal resources responsibly and in alignment with the organization’s objectives.
  • Continuous pursuit of service delivery improvement standards and practices.
  • Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
Conclusion

As per current Public Health Orders, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or have received a single dose of the most recent updated COVID-19 vaccine. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
