Position Overview

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is seeking a Senior Vice President of Research

In this pivotal role, reporting directly to the President & Chief Executive Officer, the Senior Vice President of Research will spearhead the advancement and modernization of a premier research institute, home to distinguished global researchers. This position encompasses leadership across the entire spectrum of healthcare research, ensuring that findings are effectively integrated into practice to enhance patient care. As a vital member of the Senior Executive Team, the VP will share responsibility for achieving the strategic goals of the organization while ensuring excellence in research initiatives throughout VCH.

The role involves overseeing the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI), including its strategic direction, operational management, and governance. The VP will promote a culture of innovation and inquiry across VCH, leveraging the organization’s diverse population and extensive service area to conduct impactful research.

Collaboration with the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine is essential, as the VP will act as a key representative for VCH’s research and academic pursuits at various levels, including provincial, national, and international platforms. The VP will advocate for continuous improvement and knowledge translation, driving transformational change while enhancing the visibility and value of research externally and securing funding for ongoing and new research projects.

The ideal candidate will be a recognized leader in scientific research with a proven ability to identify strategic opportunities that translate into improved patient outcomes. They will possess a visionary mindset, capable of transforming strategic concepts into actionable plans, and will support their team in realizing these objectives. A collaborative and humble leader, the VP will bring a robust network of scientific connections and a history of fostering successful partnerships in transformative research contexts. Excellent communication skills are essential, as the VP will engage with diverse audiences, from executive leadership to academic institutions and funding bodies.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • A Doctoral degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent) in a relevant medical or life sciences field.
  • A Master's degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, or a related health discipline.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of senior leadership experience in research program development, implementation, and evaluation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Eligibility for a faculty appointment at UBC or SFU.
  • A strong record of significant research accomplishments and experience in evaluating complex healthcare systems.

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, promoting services with a focus on diversity and inclusion.

  • Experience in creating organizational visions and leading strategic programs in medical governance and research.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external partners to evaluate and enhance programs and services.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of legislative policies affecting healthcare decision-making.
  • Strong leadership and strategic thinking skills to achieve organizational goals.
  • Financial acumen to manage resources responsibly in alignment with organizational objectives.
  • A commitment to continuous improvement in service delivery standards.
  • Physical capability to fulfill the duties of the position.
