Position Overview:


As an Occupational Therapist I within Alberta Health Services, you will play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with brain injuries. Reporting to the Unit Manager at the Halvar Jonson Centre for Brain Injury, your responsibilities will encompass a diverse range of therapeutic services aimed at promoting self-care, productivity, and leisure activities.

Working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, you will assess, plan, and execute client-focused treatment strategies tailored for patients recovering from acquired brain injuries. Your expertise will extend to evaluating and recommending adaptive tools, including wheelchairs, seating systems, and upper extremity orthotics. Additionally, you will engage with patients facing behavioral challenges, guiding therapy assistants in managing your caseload effectively.

The Halvar Jonson Centre for Brain Injury is dedicated to providing comprehensive care through a team-oriented approach, supporting a 48-bed facility that caters to the needs of individuals with brain injuries. This progressive program is committed to professional growth and delivering exceptional service.



Role Responsibilities:


As an Occupational Therapist, your role will involve:

  • Delivering evidence-based services focused on enhancing occupational performance for individuals, groups, or communities.
  • Functioning as a direct service provider, consultant, educator, or advocate within the healthcare team.
  • Engaging clients and their families to facilitate meaningful participation in self-care, productivity, and leisure activities.
  • Supporting clients in achieving optimal functional abilities and independence, considering their cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and physical capabilities.
  • Providing a comprehensive range of services, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and collaborative goal setting.
  • Involving clients and families as essential members of the healthcare team, encouraging their active participation in all aspects of care.
  • Collaborating with interprofessional teams to enhance service delivery and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contributing to the professional community through peer mentoring and clinical supervision of therapy assistants and students.


Qualifications:


To be considered for this position, candidates must possess:

  • A bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited institution.
  • Registration with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • CPR certification – BLS for Health Care Providers Level C.
  • The physical capability to assist patients in various functional tasks.


Preferred Experience:


Ideal candidates will have:

  • Over six months of experience working with neurological patients, particularly those with stroke and brain injuries.
  • A minimum of three years of clinical experience in rehabilitation services utilizing a client-centered approach.
