Position Overview

The Registered Nurse (RN) exemplifies clinical proficiency and adheres to the practice standards set forth by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), alongside the protocols of Southlake Regional Health Centre. The RN collaborates effectively within the healthcare team, delivering direct patient care aligned with CNO standards. This role is pivotal in influencing care-provider assignments and fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals. All nursing staff are committed to continuous professional development.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, self-motivated, and an integral part of a dynamic interdisciplinary team focused on delivering exceptional patient care in a fast-paced environment. The RN will be tasked with providing outstanding care to a varied acute medical patient demographic.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver patient and family-centered care within the RN scope of practice, adhering to the CNO's three-factor framework.
  • Operate in accordance with established hospital policies and emergency protocols.
  • Ensure practice aligns with entry-to-practice competencies, standards, guidelines, and legislation.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and all healthcare team members.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to provide care for patients with complex health needs.
  • Provide guidance and clinical support to colleagues as necessary.
  • Contribute to the ongoing assessment and documentation of each patient's health status.
  • Assist in the development and evaluation of the Plan of Care.
  • Support the orientation and mentorship of new staff and students.
  • Act as a role model in integrating safe, best practices into daily activities.
  • Take a leadership role in coordinating patient care within assigned areas.
  • Assume charge nurse responsibilities when designated.
  • Utilize human and material resources effectively.
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of clinical pathways.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Recent experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is required.
  • Proficiency in initiating IVs for infants under two years is essential.
  • Experience in caring for ventilated neonates, CPAP, and managing UAC and UVC lines, as well as TPN, is necessary.
  • Demonstrated skills in venipuncture for neonates are required.
  • Strong physical assessment capabilities.
  • Exemplary problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interprofessional team in a demanding environment.
  • Commitment to patient safety and fostering an inclusive environment.
  • Proficient in electronic documentation.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Dedication to customer service and teamwork.
  • Leadership skills with a focus on collaborative practice and quality improvement.
  • Understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.

Educational Requirements

  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is required.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Certification is mandatory.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) is preferred.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
  • Education in breastfeeding practices is preferred.
  • Completion of the S.T.A.B.L.E. course is preferred.
