Position Overview

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) exemplifies clinical proficiency and adheres to the core competencies outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), alongside the established policies and procedures of Southlake Regional Health Centre. The CNS collaborates effectively as a vital member of the healthcare team, delivering direct patient care in accordance with the three-factor framework defined by the CNO: The Client, Nurse, and the Environment. These elements significantly influence decision-making regarding care assignments and the necessity for interdisciplinary collaboration.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, self-motivated, and an integral part of a dynamic interdisciplinary team, dedicated to quality patient care and efficient patient flow. Responsibilities include providing exemplary care to a varied acute and subacute patient demographic in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver patient and family-centered care within the RN scope of practice, utilizing the three-factor framework of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Adhere to established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
  • Ensure practice aligns with entry-to-practice competencies, standards, guidelines, and legislation.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and all healthcare team members.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to provide care for patients with complex health conditions.
  • Provide consultation and clinical support to colleagues as necessary.
  • Contribute to the ongoing assessment and documentation of each patient's health status.
  • Assist in developing and implementing the Plan of Care, evaluating its effectiveness.
  • Support the orientation and mentorship of new staff and students within clinical units.
  • Act as a role model, integrating safe and best practices into daily operations to ensure exemplary care delivery.
  • Take a leadership role in coordinating patient care within assigned areas.
  • Assume charge nurse responsibilities when designated.
  • Effectively utilize human and material resources.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical pathways.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Recent experience in a medical or surgical nursing unit within the last two years is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Exhibit clinical skills and professional leadership with a focus on teamwork, patient flow, and quality enhancement.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.

Qualifications

  • RN Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current BLS certification is required.
  • ACLS certification is preferred.
  • Completion of CC1 or equivalent within three months of hire, with in-house training provided.
  • Safe Management Group Violence Prevention Training is required or must be completed within three months of hire, with in-house training provided.
