Job Summary

This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a high level of expertise in veterinary technology and laboratory instruction. As a Laboratory Facilitator, you will be responsible for providing exceptional client-centered service to students, faculty, and staff at Douglas College.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instruction and Demonstration
    • Provide laboratory instruction and demonstration related to Veterinary Technology courses, subject to the curricula approval of VTEC faculty.
    • Instruct students with respect to the laboratory component of Veterinary Technology courses and assist students with difficulties related to the lecture component of courses.
    • Demonstrate the correct use of equipment in the laboratory.
    • Instruct students with respect to safety procedures.
    • Supervise students in the laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety procedures and VTEC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Evaluation and Feedback
    • Evaluate student work and performance in relation to laboratory requirements.
    • Evaluate and provide verbal and written feedback on the performance of students in the lab in relation to essential skill requirements of courses.
    • Assess and assign final laboratory grades in conjunction with VTEC faculty.
  • Preparation and Maintenance
    • Prepare materials for use in the laboratory, subject to the curricula approval of the VTEC faculty, including using multimedia computer applications.
    • Gather, prepare, and set out materials, supplies, and equipment for each lab.
    • Set up and maintain simulation models according to manufacturers' recommendations.
    • Obtain and prepare companion animal cadavers for use in lab.
  • Other Related Duties
    • Create, maintain, and update report sheets.
    • Maintain records of VTEC laboratory grades.
    • Set up laboratory equipment and demonstrations.
    • Ensure equipment is in good working order and perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance according to manufacturers' recommendations.
    Requirements
    • A Diploma in Animal Health/Veterinary Technology from a CVMA/AVMA accredited Animal Health/Veterinary Technology Program combined with a passing grade on the Veterinarian Technician's National Examination (VTNE) and ongoing membership in the British Columbia Veterinary Technologists Association.
    • A minimum of 3 years of experience working in a veterinary medical facility.
    • Excellent working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of a veterinary facility, including laboratory, surgical, radiology, and anesthetic equipment and apparatus together with a good working knowledge of safety measures related to the operation of a veterinary facility including WHMIS and GHS.
    • Demonstrated experience speaking to groups and preparing written materials for lab assignments. Experience creating Standard Operating Procedures is an asset.
    • Good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).
    • A demonstrated ability to handle different animal species compassionately and with the use of accepted professional best practices, perform all duties of a veterinary technologist, including but not limited to anesthesia, dentistry, nursing, radiography, and laboratory, multiple ongoing patient and student needs, communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing, and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and the public, maintain current knowledge in the field of animal health, and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
