About the School of Life Science & Business

The School of Life Science & Business provides dynamic, high-tech, hands-on learning experiences in support of animal health, business, and horticulture. The School is also home to the National Meat Training Centre and the Olds College Botanic Gardens. A variety of certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are offered within the School of Life Science & Business.

The Opportunity - Greenhouse and Botanic Garden Technician

Olds College is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team and support greenhouse and botanic garden operations for educational and research purposes. This is a permanent, full-time position with a comprehensive benefits package and pension plan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the functionality of greenhouses and related support facilities.
  • Maintain indoor plant collections and the Atrium.
  • Participate in the pest management program.
  • Assist with weekly Greenhouse Sales.
  • Order, purchase, and maintain updated inventories of supplies.
  • Contribute to the growing of plant material for the Botanic Gardens and greenhouse sales.
  • Perform basic maintenance on infrastructure and equipment.
  • Carry out general and specialized landscape, container, and bed maintenance operations.
  • Operate landscape and greenhouse equipment such as mowers, string trimmers, tractors, aerators, sprayers, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Formal horticulture education is required.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: field and landscape horticulture, turf maintenance, greenhouse operations (minimum 2 years).
  • General knowledge of greenhouse control systems and indoor and outdoor irrigation systems.
  • Current Pesticide Applicator certification or willingness to obtain certification during the probationary period.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and demonstrate a high standard of professionalism when interacting with Olds College staff and clients.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work successfully as part of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision.
