The Opportunity - Service Worker II, Greenhouse & Botanic Gardens - permanent, full-time
Olds College is seeking a Service Worker II to work within a team to support greenhouse and botanic garden operations for the purpose of education and research. This is a permanent union position with a comprehensive benefit and pension plan.
Key Job Functions:
Monitor the functioning of the greenhouses and related support facilitiesMaintain indoor plant collection and AtriumParticipate in the pest management program Assist with weekly Greenhouse SalesOrder, purchase and maintain updated inventories of suppliesParticipate in the growing of plant material for the Botanic Gardens and greenhouse salesPerform basic maintenance to infrastructure and equipmentPerform general and specialized landscape, container and bed maintenance operationsOperate landscape and greenhouse equipment such as mowers, string trimmers, tractors, aerators, sprayers etc.Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
Formal Horticulture education requiredExperience in one or more of the following areas: field and landscape horticulture, turf maintenance, greenhouse operations (minimum 2 years)General knowledge of greenhouse control systems and indoor and outdoor irrigation systems.Current Pesticide Applicators certification or willing to obtain certification during the probationary period Maintain effective working relationships and demonstrate a high standard of professionalism when interacting with Olds College staff and clientsBasic computer skillsWork successfully as a team member, as well as with limited supervisionRetail experience working with a Point of Sale system would be an assetConditions of Employment:
Class 5 driver's license requiredHeavy lifting, repetitive physical work, and work in adverse weather conditionsSome work outside of regular College operating hours and work week may be requiredCurrent Criminal Reference check with a Vulnerable Sector Check that is free of any offenses.
Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies.
