STATUS: This is a temporary part-time role.

WORKING HOURS: 08:30 - 16:30
Work Days: Saturday to Tuesday
Days Off: Wednesday to Friday

COMPENSATION: $30.64 - $32.31 per hour

ROLE OVERVIEW: The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) plays a crucial role in providing support to individuals navigating challenges related to mental health and substance use. Reporting to the Clinical Operations Manager, the PSS utilizes their personal experiences to foster connections with clients, helping them overcome barriers to accessing care and promoting engagement with health services.

The PSS collaborates closely with clients and the healthcare team to tailor care plans that address individual needs. Responsibilities include offering education, setting goals, and advocating for clients from a lived experience perspective. The PSS also engages in care planning, team discussions, and quality improvement initiatives, contributing valuable insights based on their experiences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establish supportive relationships with clients to ensure proactive engagement.
  • Assist clients in accessing health and social services as part of their care plans.
  • Accompany clients to appointments and coordinate follow-up visits as necessary.
  • Collaborate with research teams to enhance clinical follow-up processes.
  • Conduct outreach to clients for clinic appointments and home care visits.
  • Communicate effectively with the interprofessional healthcare team to share outcomes and insights.
  • Participate in community engagement events relevant to client goals.
  • Provide education to clients regarding their rights and grievance procedures within the healthcare system.
  • Facilitate individual and group support sessions focused on empowerment and life skills.
  • Assist clients in integrating into the community and escort them to appointments as needed.
  • Advocate for clients to ensure their recovery goals are met through appropriate services.
  • Educate team members about the experiences of individuals from marginalized communities.
  • Collaborate with clients and team members to identify goals and develop care plans.
  • Manage crisis situations effectively and involve external resources when necessary.
  • Utilize electronic systems for client updates and appointment scheduling.
  • Maintain knowledge of clinic protocols and assist clients in navigating the healthcare system.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives and support research activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Relevant experience in mental health, addictions, or social services, including service planning and peer support training.
  • Experience in community social services or a combination of education and training.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification is an asset.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with mental health issues, addictions, or homelessness.
  • Ability to serve as a role model by sharing lived experiences and practical information.
  • Flexibility and creativity in providing services to diverse populations.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles and recovery-oriented practices.
