Job Summary

Rutgers University is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Operating Engineer to join our team in the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). This is a full-time position responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and improvement of our central heating and cooling plants, as well as the supervision of plant operating engineers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of our central heating and cooling plants, including the College Avenue Central Heating/Cooling Plant, Newell Central Heating/Cooling Plant, Cook Chiller Plant, Walters Hall Central Heating/Cooling Plant, 24 College Avenue Central Heating/Cooling Plant, Murray Hall Central Heating/Cooling Plant, and Foran Hall Chilled Water Distribution.
  • Supervise plant operating engineers, including training and ensuring safety compliance with all regulatory statutes.
  • Coordinate major project development through planning, design, and construction phases, in conjunction with outside architects/engineers, REHS, Code Official, and other departments and agencies affected.
  • Work with Utility Engineer on all projects to ensure compliance and that work meets the overall needs and goals of the department.
  • Ensure that all State and Federal regulatory requirements are in compliance, including Title 5 Air Permit Requirements and Spill Prevention Measures.
Requirements
  • New Jersey Gold Seal License, with a minimum of 5 years experience in power plant management, including experience and training in the area of cogeneration.
  • Requires a Universal Refrigeration License or obtain one within 6 months of employment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with HVAC equipment and controls, operation and repairs.
  • Supervisory experience including supervising equipment repair contractors is required.
  • Computer literacy including Energy Management Software, Equipment Monitoring, and Microsoft Office is a requisite.
