Position Overview

The City of Merritt is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of **Water and Wastewater Operator Trainee**. This position is crucial for delivering essential services to the community by ensuring the responsible and environmentally sound management of water and wastewater systems.

Based at the Wastewater Treatment Centre, the selected candidate will work under the mentorship of the Chief Plant Operator, contributing to the effective operation and upkeep of water and wastewater facilities. The primary goal is to provide residents with clean, safe, and potable water.

Key Responsibilities

The Water and Wastewater Operator Trainee will be responsible for:

  1. Conducting equipment inspections
  2. Performing equipment servicing
  3. Executing preventative maintenance tasks
  4. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records

This role requires collaboration with the team to support the operations of:

  1. Wastewater Treatment Plant
  2. Wastewater Collection System
  3. Water Treatment System
  4. Water Distribution System

Additionally, the incumbent must be prepared to respond to after-hours emergencies, work weekends on a rotating basis, and be available for on-call duties as needed. The position entails a commitment to a 40-hour work week.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following qualifications to be considered for this training opportunity:

  1. A strong commitment to safety and customer service excellence
  2. Ability to integrate knowledge with practical work
  3. Effective verbal and written communication skills
  4. Capability to work both independently and as part of a team
  5. Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical documents
  6. Demonstrated spatial awareness, manual dexterity, and mechanical aptitude
  7. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel), SCADA System, and HMI System
  8. Experience operating relevant equipment
  9. Problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
  10. Physical capability to perform the duties required by the position
  11. Minimum of 2 years of experience in wastewater collection and water treatment
  12. At least 4 years of experience in water distribution and wastewater treatment
  13. Possession of an air brake endorsement
  14. Certification in Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  15. Confined Space Certification

Applicants must hold a Level II EOCP Certification in at least one of the following areas:

  1. Municipal Wastewater Collection
  2. Water Treatment
  3. Water Distribution
  4. Wastewater Treatment
  5. Chlorine Handling Certification (BCWWA/EOCP)

Level II EOCP Certified candidates will work towards achieving Level III certification through a structured training plan.
