Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Utilities Maintenance Operator II to join our team at the City of Merritt. As a key member of our utilities department, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing various components of our water distribution, wastewater collection, and storm water conveyance systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain the water distribution system and wastewater collection system in good working order.
  • Perform daily operations in accordance with provincial legislation and regulations.
  • Collect and analyze samples, and complete lab testing and sampling to identify inefficiencies and take corrective action.
  • Handle water and wastewater treatment chemicals safely and effectively.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot, inspect, and service equipment as needed.
  • Focus on safety practices and policies while undertaking daily tasks.
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date maintenance and plant records.
  • Work collaboratively with City staff to identify and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Compile data and prepare electronic reports on plant operation to ensure minimum plant process requirements are met.
Requirements
  • Grade 12 or equivalency.
  • Operators must possess both an EOCP Water Distribution System Operator Level II certification and a Wastewater Collection System Level II certification.
  • Valid BC Class 3 Drivers License with Air Endorsement.
  • 5 years of experience safely and effectively working in a municipal utilities environment, including hands-on experience with installation, maintenance, and repair of water main, valves, hydrants, meters, sewer main, storm mains, lift stations, pumps, manholes, and other related distribution/collection/conveyance systems components.
  • Competent experience in the safe operation of heavy equipment, including Combination Sewer Cleaner/Hydro-Vac truck, Front End Loader, Dump Truck, etc.
  • Some demonstrated experience leading crews to complete projects and tasks in a municipal utilities environment.

  • Sound knowledge of proper construction and maintenance practices related to utilities infrastructure.
  • Spatial ability, manual dexterity, and mechanical aptitude.
  • A safety-first attitude with ability to comply with safety requirements.
  • Ability to integrate technical knowledge with work duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications.
  • Ability to contribute to a culture of safety and customer service excellence.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Sound knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, and procedures related to water distribution systems, including standard methods for bacteriological sampling and testing, cross-connection control, and disinfection.
  • Some knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic principles.
  • Basic office computer skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply City bylaws, policies, procedures, system diagrams, and mapping, and construction standards and specifications.
  • Ability to create and maintain manual and/or computerized records, and report/interpret data information.
  • Ability to frequently perform heavy manual labor over long periods of time and frequently work in potentially hazardous working conditions.
Additional Requirements
  • First Aid Emergency Level - Industry and CPR Level A Certification; Traffic Control training; WHMIS Certification; Equipment Operator's training, Confined Spaces Training, Asbestos Handling, Forklift training, and other job-related safety training.
  • BC Water and Waste Association (BCWWA) Membership is an asset.
