Position Overview:
As an integral part of a dynamic Recreation team, you will offer recreational guidance and support to participants in Norfolk County's diverse recreation programs catering to all age groups, including day camps and special events. Your responsibilities will encompass program planning, execution, ensuring safety at sites, and administrative tasks, while supervising groups of up to 10 participants.
This role fosters an environment where children, youth, adults, and families can enhance their skills, forge friendships, engage socially, and boost their self-esteem. You will be accountable for the welfare of participants under the direction of the Recreation Coordinators, ensuring that activities are safe, inclusive, and of high quality, adhering to the High Five principles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain attendance records by promptly notifying the appropriate Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor of any absences.
- Engage in the delivery of a variety of recreation and active living programs offered by Norfolk County, including after-school activities, sports, arts and crafts, skill-based programming, and seasonal camps. Ensure that programming is tailored to meet the needs of participants.
- Monitor participant behavior closely and enforce relevant policies.
- Implement lesson plans provided by Recreation Coordinators or Supervisors.
- Assist with snack service and cleanup when necessary. Prepare and organize program materials and equipment, reporting any damages or shortages.
- Exhibit the confidence and capability to make independent decisions that prioritize the best interests of participants. Effectively resolve conflicts and issues as they arise.
- Prioritize the safety and well-being of participants throughout all programs and events, proactively addressing potential risks.
- Act as a liaison with participants' parents when applicable, reinforcing Norfolk County's commitment to customer service and inclusivity.
- Adhere to Norfolk County policies and procedures in all program activities.
- Foster positive relationships with colleagues and the public.
- Participate in training and orientation sessions.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Knowledge and Experience:
- Minimum age of 15 years, with a high school education.
- Currently enrolled in a secondary education institution or higher learning, with plans to return for the next term.
- Standard First Aid with CPR Level C certification (must be obtained by start date if hired).
- Completion of HIGH FIVE training (must be obtained within 2 months of start date if hired).
- Experience working with children and knowledge of child development, arts, sports, and games; experience with adults and seniors is a plus.
- Prior leadership experience is essential (e.g., student council member, youth council role).
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to prepare, facilitate, and adapt program plans and activities daily.
- Strong customer service and time management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
- Familiarity with Norfolk County's recreation programs.
- Capacity to work collaboratively in a team environment, follow instructions, and complete tasks with minimal supervision while adhering to health and safety policies.
- Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public.
- Motivated and hardworking, capable of working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Understanding of safe work practices related to job responsibilities and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Compensation:
Salary: $17.38 per hour
