Recreation Coordinator, Community Planning

**Basic Function**:
Working as part of a team within the Recreation Department, the Recreation Coordinator, Community Programs will be responsible for the development, coordination, implementation, and facilitation of various recreational and inclusion programming, for all ages and abilities, within municipal recreational, community and aquatics programs and special events delivered by, or in partnership with Norfolk County.

**Position Description**:
- Research and develop short
- and long-range plans and programming, with input from the Supervisor, which meet the needs and interests of children, youth, adults and seniors leisure activities within the community.
- Plan, develop, and implement inclusive recreational programming, leisure activities and special events, to promote physical, social, mental and overall wellness for individuals of all ages and abilities ensuring recreational opportunities are accessible and inclusive, maintain innovation and creativity based on current trends and demographics in order to meet the needs of the community members.
- Plan, organize, provide, and implement the Day Camp Program, and manage, oversee, evaluate, and improve the day-to-day operations of the Day Camp Programs with input from the Supervisor.
- Participate in summer student and volunteer recruitment; provide direction to summer students and volunteers in accordance with departmental and corporate policies; and provide feedback for summer staff and volunteer evaluations.
- Implement and schedule planned programs, through communication, facilitation and supervision of the activities, workshops and events; assist students with leading the activities, set up and tear down of activities.
- Identify gaps/barriers affecting individuals with disabilities and seniors in Norfolk County and community-based programming.
- Develop student and volunteer schedules for applicable programs; input student timesheets into electronic system when required; assist the Supervisor in the supervision of the Recreation Programmers, students, and volunteers; and assist with guidance and training of staff and volunteers including the incorporation of policies, procedures and best practices of High Five and the operation of the County’s two Seniors Active Living Centres (SALCs).
- Assist the Supervisor with ensuring all certifications and training are completed for the applicable program. Assist with researching and recommending additional training, encouraging growth and development of staff and volunteers.
- Maintains positive, constructive relationships with staff, volunteers, and third-party service providers with the goal of meeting participant needs.
- Design, implement and monitor all day camp training, ensuring compliance with the Childcare Act, Parks and Recreation Ontario, and Ontario Camp Association; including facilitating High Five PHCD training sessions to staff and administer Quest evaluations.
- Provide theoretical and practical knowledge of various disabilities, behavior management and intervention techniques and risk management.
- Coordinates applicant assessments (All About Me Forms) and assesses individual needs of participants in order to coordinate appropriate placements of participants to meet identified needs (i.e.: 1:1; small group; mínimal support in large group etc.).
- Ensure professional liaison and effective communication with individuals, community organizations/group, community services agencies, other County departments and work with Community Partners to identify and evaluate programs and activities which meet the needs of the community and addresses gaps in service.
- Serves as a liaison with parents/guardians of participants, reinforcing Norfolk County’s customer service, diversity and inclusion (special needs, ethno-cultural, English as a second language, socio-economic)
- Provide behavioral management and physical assistance to individuals with physical, developmental, medical and cognitive disabilities and provide assistance and supervision to program participants with various disabilities within municipal recreation programs.
- Monitor and assist participants as required by providing applicable strategies and accommodations appropriate to the program environment (recreational and aquatics programs and in-water supervision may be required)
- Prioritizes child well-being, safety and protection throughout programs. Evaluates situations for potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of participants and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks.
